Well Jennifer was running a little rough. I came across a thread that bl85 made about using Ford 2.9 injectors. So after doing ALOT of research i decided to go to the boneyard and yank a set out of a 91 ranger with the 2.9. While they werent F1ZE they had the number E7DE B1B on them. I recall a guy saying he tried those exact same ones and had trouble with them leaking. So after more research, i went ahead with the swap today. I did not re-use the stock retaining clips.(once the fuel rail is bolted in place, they wont move anyhow.) I did notice that they were indeed shorter by about a quarter inch. So I went and bought new O-rings for my 86 Firebird. I took the liberty of taking measurements with my calipers of the differences between the Ford O-rings and the GM ones. The sizes are as follows...
Ford O-ring
.560 od

GM O-ring

Now I measured the new O-rings right out of the box and not exposed to any gasoline. They will swell a little once installed. I went ahead and put the injectors with new O-rings intalled into the holes in the LIM first and set the rail down on top of them. They seated quite well. Then I bolted down the fuel rail and then connected up the fuel lines etc. On a side note, i priced a new set of gaskets for the upper plenum and was quite taken aback by what they cost..$25 bucks. So I bought a roll of gasket material for $4.99 took off the old gaskets carefully and used a silver sharpie to trace the outline of the old gaskets onto the gasket material. I then used an exacto knife to cut out all the intricate parts. A common hole puncher you would use for paper does a nice job on the bolt holes. I then sprayed the upper intake with high tack, let it get sticky and put my new gaskets onto it. Now if i have to remove the UIM, the gasket stays stuck to the upper and doesnt tear. If youre unsure whether it will seal again, just spray some high tack on the lower and put the bolts in. So after i fired the car up(of course the ECM is re-learning everything) i immediately noticed a very smooth idle. Once it was warmed up and in closed loop, i took her for a drive. The throttle response was staggering compared to the old injectors and from what i can tell, i am not using very much gas, not like before. It does run a tad rich on warm up but it goes away once the ECM takes control of things. So my total cost for this swap? $30.00 for junkyard injectors and $4.99 for the roll of gasket material and about $8.00 for the new O-rings. Oh and while i was at it, i made a new gasket for the TB as well. There is no leaks whatsoever and i now have a car that idles better and responds 100X better than before with a little more gas mileage.

i actually enjoy going to the junkyard. The local U-pull-it has alot to choose from. I noticed quite a few 3100's there,(good to know as ill need the heads and such for my hybrid).And they charge $25 each for a cylinder head and $20 for an intake manifold. I love the U-pull yards. The prices are unbeatable.

Did you buy the O-ring set for a Camaro or a Ford from which the injectors came from? What is the flow rate for those injectors anyway? When I installed my fuel rail the past few times, I always installed the rail with the injectors already in it. I've never tried installing the injectors in the intake first THEN the rail. Easier?
Use camaro o-rings. You need to line the clips up on the rail first, so putting the rail on after would be pretty hard.

If you are going to re-use the factory retaining clips then you need to put them on the injectors then install the injectors into the rail.(make sure you lube the O-rings!). Then you push the rail down onto the intake being careful to line up the injectors with their perspective holes in the lower intake manifold. I did not use them(retaining clips) and have had no leaks or problems. It's personal preference really. And yes you get the O-rings for the Camaro, the Ford ones are too small. See my measurements above. The flow rate from my info is 14lbs per hour at 33psi.(Ford's rating) Now the Camaro/Firebird fuel system is around 40psi so they will flow more like 15 pounders with the added pressure.
