3.4 Fourth Gen parts car, good idea?

I might have the chance to pick up a fourth gen 3.4 camaro from a junk yard. it has 219k miles and an automatic transmission. so what all parts could i use off of it for my '86 2.8 camaro. I know the engine (which will have to be rebuilt), the drive shaft, and the rear axle, but what, if anything, else?

Depends on what they want for it vs what they want for what you're going to use off it. You can change out the dash & center console as well, but I never thought it looked right in a 3rd gen.

I agree with you about the dash, but i meant mechanically. Are there any more mechanical parts other than the ones that are stated in my first post, such as suspension components if they fit and are an improvement over stock. And how difficult would it be to swap an entire 3.4, ecm and all, into my car? i have read the 3.4 swap boogie, but it describes a swap using the original ecm.

What year is it? If it's new enough to have LS1 brakes you could swap those over too. You really don't want to get into the front suspension, too much fabrication. If you're grabbing the motor & ecm you should drop the trans in too. Way easier to reprogram an E-trans than older stuff.

Whatever you do DO NOT use that ECM. I sell swap harnesses for the 4th gens to use 7730 and 7727 ECM's lol since they have no tuning options. The 93 trans is a re-badged 700r4.

EDIT: If it's a 3.4, then it can't be an LS1 3.4 ended in 95 (LT1 days).

Re: 3.4 Fourth Gen parts car, good idea?

The only thing in the drive train worth getting is the engine. Skip the drive shaft as it won't bolt into a 3rd gen. Skip the rear unless you want to purchase rims with a different offset (4th gen rear is wider). The trans is a E setup, so requires a controller.

The brakes are no better then the 3rd gen brakes (which always require an upgrade).

If the seats are decent (at 219K, I doubt it) they would be worth getting.

So, we are back to the engine, which after a rebuild is a decent upgrade from the 2.8l setup.

RBob.

Depending on the price, use what you need and part it out.
4th gen rear, console, dash, seats, and body panels can all be easily resold. Then you can repay the cost of the swap!

Garbage iron calipers then. Weren't you working on e-trans control using an older obd1 ecm? Any luck? The trans would still be worthwhile if he had a way to control it.

Re: 3.4 Fourth Gen parts car, good idea?

what about the overall condition of the car? it does have 200k+ miles on it....

i think youd have to get a good overall inspection of the car and see if its worth it.....does it run / can you start it up?

It's in a jy so I don't think it runs. He already knows to rebuild it.

Re: 3.4 Fourth Gen parts car, good idea?

Thanks for all the input, but my grandad blew the engine in his truck ('98 GMC Sonoma 2200 4cyl) the other day and fixing it has become the priority. So the junk van i was going to use as a trade is going to fixing his truck.
