thinking of a 2.8/3.1 f-body for a daily driver

Hey guys, well it looks like I'll be selling my trusty 1994 GMC Jimmy soon since it's a gas hog, averaging 14-15 mpg in mixed driving. As a replacement, I was thinking of an 85-92 f-body with either the 2.8 or 3.1. Do you think that the trade would pay off? I'd love something that can average 20 mpg.

I already have a 91 trans am 'vert with a 305 TPI that I can swear gets better mileage than my Jimmy, although it's hard to come to a conclusion since I only put 1000 miles on it since I got it in August of 09 and those were all with a lead foot lol.

I love the thirdgens and I'd love a DD that has attitude, but do you think it would be practical in terms of reliability? My driving usually consists of "around town" (not constant stop and go like in a city but what you'd expect in suburbs) with about 30-40% highway.

Thanks!

its really depends on the milage of the car, and how well its been taken care of. You could pickup a car with 200k miles that runs like a top and is more reliable than a 50k car that has never been taken care of.

my 92 3.1 bird is my DD in the warmer months. the PO took really good care of it and it has been quite reliable. the battery didnt survive the winter, and the alt pulley came off and wretched teh alternator, but other than that its been flawless. I would drive it anywhere. Wouldnt drive it in the snow though

mileage is decent, im getting mid/lower 20's to work and back, only about 15 minutes drive.

My 88 RS with the 2.8L is my newest daily driver. It now has 86,000 original miles on it. I bought it from the original owner (74 years old and he quit driving). Car was in great shape and always garaged. I have done a major tune up (plugs, cap, rotor, wires and a new coil because I had one laying around) replaced some dried out vacuum lines, seafoamed it and all is good . The car is an awesome daily driver that I drive 75 miles a day five days a week. I have about 3k in the car now and it get about 21-25 mpg average. if you find a nice one like i did the third gen v6's can be fun cars. (I added a magna-flow dual outlet exhaust that I think looks and sounds good for a little v6) The exhaust and tuneup along with shift kit made a big difference in drivability and fun factor.

Going on 10 years and 230,000 miles and glad the 2.8 is still kicking good, I like it. Use to get 25-28 around town but only cause around here ya do 50+ as its long country blocks.

I got another V8 car n 10-13 sucks, fun, but sucks.

Its a 1 of 3 made hatch from all I have found.
None like it, many similar.
There are also like a 100 different styles and you can still find them out there but costly still at times. Some are ugly though like the factory one.

called a notch back, just search on here for that.
