I dunno whats going on now,

I dunno whats going on now, car drive fine all over town, first time I hit the eway for a long while as it just not worth it, to much traffic, I can do 50-55 through town n get there just as fast.

But on my way home I hit it, somewhere over 70, 75-80 maybe it just dies.
Total loss of power, just wont fire. almost get stuck on the eway which means a pricy tow and I get it to kinda fire but it won't go very fast, dies again, get off the eway and its idling fine, look under n around, all is well, get back to my side of town taking it easy, got her up to usualy 50 in town and no problems.

It was like I just lost all power / spark, back up FP swtich didn't change anything. Not a speed thing as I don't have any limiter in the 86. NOt hot or anything, well under 200, it has new plugs.

Drove for several hrs today all over town with no problems but a few miles on the eway and it gets all pissy.

At a total loss here, with no clue on where to look, nothing is out of place.

Back to plan B I guess

Install intake n carb and vac advance dizzy on Bird 2.8

Pull and install in s15

Find BBB 455 for the wagon

Pull SBB 350 out of wagon and install in Bird

Re: I dunno whats going on now,

Could the Pick up coil or the ignition module be on their way out? Both are in bad spots that are exposed to lots of heat. Or I had a problem that out of the blue I would lose all power and it would back fire and stall, It turned out my coil was shot, This only happened when it got hot and would run fine if it was just started, then about 15-30minutes of driving it started acting up. My bets are on the coil, pick up coil or the ignition module.

Re: I dunno whats going on now,

Aye, I'm having the same thoughts killert, could also be cap or rotor perhaps, or I rather doubt it, but maybe cam or dist drive gears bad, or perhaps, cam itself or timing chain.
But, my money is on the coil or ICM, or maybe timing.

Random, but my dad had the same problem. Never did figure out what it was and it hasn't come back. Makes me think it was gas or something.

Re: I dunno whats going on now,

Thats what gets me, if it was heat it would do it at speed below 60 too, I drove for over hr and a half eariler that day but all under 60. Drove fine for the majority of that trip till I went to head home and not till at a good click did it do it.

heat soak or bad parts should show their ugly head at speeds under 60 too.

Since getting it back going I take hr long plus drives weekly but all under 60 as its through town or in the country.

What conserns me is the only way to "test" is to get back on the eway and crank up the speed and risk getting stranded again.
When it should act up at lower speeds too.

Re: I dunno whats going on now,

I still say its a coil. Thats how mine started, out of nowhere and it would only do it sometimes.. then it got alot more frequent. Pull the coil and look for burn marks are anything out of the ordinary.

Re: I dunno whats going on now,

Could you take a heat gun to the old coil to get it really hot then try and drive it?
