I kind of cheated though.. he had his wife and daughter in the car
The old guy lines up next to me at a light and I look over as if I wanted to race him (hehe). So he takes off and I light the tires and move ahead and he kept up a car length with me until I shut it down at about 75mph. The funny part is he was in the right hand lane and he stopped at the next light to race me again (he was looking over at me ferciously) but I went in the left hand turning lane (because I wanted to goto mcdonalds ) and he turns directly side ways and gets in behind me.. lol. So I turn left and I hear him burn some rubber and I do another left into mcdonalds and he takes off. Too bad I should have went again but I figured once is enough. Poor guy probably went home and beat his family.

Well if you beat a newer Grand Am he must have had a four banger, cause I can tell you from experience (see sig) that a newer Grand Am with a 6 will eat you for lunch and come back to smoke the leftovers.
Unless of course you got some serious mods, or the other guy is clueless how to drive. Judging from your sig, your mods dont push you up around 170hp needed to keep up with this:

I can hold my own against one of those in a fair race. Talkin about the v6, not the four banger. Those v6 grand ams arent gear well and cant get up as hard as our v6 fbodys. Plus, they're only automatic. Just a thought, payce.

I drive a 1997 Buick LeSabre with the K code 3.8L V6. Stock it has 205 horsepower, 230 ft/lbs of torque. The LeSabre, stock, does 0-60 in 7.4 secs and a 15.6 1/4 mile at 89.9 mph. There is no way in hell that a 2.8 can keep up with a 3.8 V6. I only have 37,000 miles on my car. I have brand new Toyo Proxes H4 225/60 HR 15's and new Monro Sensatrac struts. It eats a lot of sorry-*** stock 1980's smogger 305 V8's for lunch, let alone economy V6's.
Even with those mods, even a 4 banger GA should be able to run and hide. I drive these cars every day, and let me just say you would need to do MAJOR work to a 2.8 (cam, worked heads, etc.) to even think about keeping up with a 3.4 GA.
A 3.4 auto GA does 0-60 in 7.7, or about 3 seconds faster than a 2.8 Camaro 5 speed. You don't make up a full 3 seconds with bolt ons, guys
BTW, the 2.4/autos go 0-60 in 8.4. I ain't bashing our cars, just saying that if a GA driver is serious about racing ya, they will pound you 95% of the time. If they can't, then they ain't trying hard enough

I've run 8.8-9.1 0-60's with someone in the car. Its hard getting all the speed out of these 2.8's but i'll tell ya, i've found the trick. Check my sig, all those wins are legit. Just gotta believe in this little motor that can! payce....

How much do those cars weigh?? Damn its puzzling if we should try against anyone if a Grand Am can kick our asses. I know there are a lot of newer cars out there that are pretty slow, but dont neon's even have like 150hp? It would break my heart if I did headers, a cam, p&p'ing, etc to my 2.8 and some 4 door sedan still beat me.

I work for Enterprise rental car company... and i drive those grand ams all the time... v6... those things can ****in move... specially if u manually shift em... their aint know way those 2.8s can keep up with them... i raced my friend with my 3.1 and he had the 4 banger GA... i beat him.. but no way would i b able to take the 6ers... sorry but its true... those who have driven them will see the truth... those who havent... sorry

To answer the weight question: 3050 lbs 4 cylinder, 3175 V6 (direct from my Pontiac dealer literature )
Now, about the 4 banger beating the 2.8. Yes, 150hp these days is nothing to write home about. BUT, the 2.4 has a very broad torque curve, especially for a DOHC four. We may weigh 100 lbs more and be down 15hp, but factor in the broader torque curve of the 2.4 (along with the more efficient 4T40E tranny), and technically unless the GA is sleeping, he should be able to run and hide from a 2.8/3.1 that hasn't been breathed on heavily.
That isn't to say a lot of people are on the ball. Before I did anything to the RS, I hung with a '98 GA GT 2.4/5 speed no problem to 65...he should have been able to waste me.
