My max has been 137 mph (paced with a VW turbo Passat), and my engine wasn't shutting down- but I had (and still have) my ADS computer chip in, not the GM one.
You can axe the governor by eliminating the signal to the computer. For pre-88 guys, this is great, because our speedometers will still work. For you 88-up guys that have electronic (yes, with an analog needle) speedometers, you'll lose your speedometer.
The VSS on pre-88 cars is a yellow box located at the back of the speedometer. A regular speedo cable connects the tailshaft of the transmission to the speedometer. The VSS then "reads" the speedometer, and sends pulses down a wire to the computer. If you put a switch on that VSS output wire, between the VSS and computer, you can kill the governor. Just flip the switch to "off" when you're going for speed, and the computer won't know how fast you're going. You'll also set computer's error code for a bad VSS sensor... but that's alright.
For 88-up guys, you've all got electronic speedometers, even though (before someone asks) you've got a regular needle. Your VSS's are located in the tailshaft of the transmission- you've got no speedometer cable. The VSS signal drives the computer, and the computer drives the speedometer. You can still wipe out the governor though; just put the switch on the VSS line- but your speedometer will die. Then you just need a CB radio and get yourself paced!

My old 82 V6 Camaro would cut at 160km/hr. It didn't have an ECM so it's a complete mystery on how. Most early Canadian (Pre-FI) or other exported V6 F-bodys don't have computers like the US one, but do have a very scaled down version which is porobably what cuts it out.
My 86 Bird has the E-Speedo (VSS in tailshaft). Might have only been auto Birds in 86 that got the E-speedo. I think Camaros got them 88/89 but I am not sure.

Dale, are you sure nobody swapped clusters & sensors on you? My '86 (2.8, automatic) has the mechanical speedo- and the tailshaft VSS isn't mentioned in my 1986 GM service book.
Only because of the danger of a tire coming apart,,,, if you get Z rated tires on a 4th generation Camaro,,, the governer is taken off the car and you can go any speed straight from GM
TomP: Nope, my cluster/VSS is all vintage 86. My aunt was the previous owner and she is not the car-upgrading/gear-head type
My GM service manual does mention the two VSS styles in it, if the pages are the same, check page 8A-201-11 figure b. This is Electrical Diagnosis-Component Data-Component Location Views shows the Tailshaft style and 8A-33-1 starts the section on the Tailshaft VSS.
I saw the mech-type in the book before but now I can't find it.
Wow! I guess I didn't check my GM book that closely, then! I'll bring these page #'s home tonight & check them out... weird. Hey, was your car maybe made for California, or Canada, and it had something to do with emissions?
Firebirds had electric speedos, Camaros had mechanical. Camaros didn't get electric speedos until 90. Firebirds had them from 85 or 86. My old firebird (86) had an electric speedo. My 85 IROC & 86 Sport coupe both have mechanical.

My Bird was made IN Calif but nothing in the RPOs say it got any special treatment. Could have been that the Calif. cars got different stuff. I know they got different paint jobs - crappy clear coat that doesn't stick.
Ah HA! We're all right! Thanks for the insight, Dale & Jim, here's the deal:
Firebirds with either the "full gauges" cluster or the "digital" cluster had their VSS in the tranny.
Firebirds with the "indicator" cluster (idiot lights) had the VSS in the back of the mechanical speedo. Dale, that's GM manual page # 8A-33-4 , and the circuit op is described on the next page, 8A-33-5.
