Almost destroyed the engine today

I hadn't driven my car in a few weeks, but today I took it to a NTTGA meeting. Getting close to the exit after being on the highway for over 30 minutes, I looked down and saw that my temo gauge was so high it was insane.

I pulled over right away, and let the car sit for about 30 minutes without touching it. I was going to check the water in the radiator, but when I touched the cap, I noticed it was loose, so all the water blew out while I was on the highway. I have no idea how it got loose, I don't remember checking the antifreeze while the car sat, so I'm stumped on that one. I waited until the needle was 3/4 of the way down, and I limped it to the next intersection where I topped it off with water. It was fine after that, but With the temp that high I'm shocked I didn't blow a gasket or blow the engine or something.

I was advised to check oil consumption in the next couple of weeks because extreme temps like that can destroy the rings, but so far the car doesn't seem to be an worse for the experience.

check out the pic. I would have bet money a car could not have survived those temps

Re: Almost destroyed the engine today

i can tell u it wasnt actually that high , most of that was from steam collecting around the sensor, but i bet u it was atleast 240/250

a honda would have blow the head gasket long before that temp they are known for it.

i would change the oil though getting the oil super hot breaks it down, u really dont even have to change the filter just put new oil in it

Re: Almost destroyed the engine today

at HW speed you probably got enough air flow to air cool it, why you didn't notice or smell anything bad happening.
And id say your oil is used up too.

I think the gauge can go bad too. I know mine goes up pretty fast to 240+ degrees and then it flutters around until it gets stuck all the way up.

Re: Almost destroyed the engine today

Had the same thing happen to me, I was driving home on the freeway and I saw it incline. I disegarded it but when i got off the freeway and drove on the access it quickly went up again and I had to stop at a gas station a few blocks from home. Checked the coolant level and it was out got some water poured it in the radiator and noticed there was a leak. Though it had cooled off by then so I drove it home but the temp gauge was beyond the 260 mark the drive home. I was biting my nails and was sure I had blown a gasket. Changed the radiator the next day and filled it with coolant, been fine since

Re: Almost destroyed the engine today

I ran mine so hot it shut off on me, lol.. because the gauge was broken and I wasn't quite sure of the temp, when I first got it it had the original radiator which was bad, so I'd guess it was easily around 270.. and as I was pulling into work the steam started to roll and it shut off. I instantly knew I blew the head gasket, which is why it died.. Having no choice I worked my 10 hour shift, came out to assess the damage and the car ran just fine, got hot on the way home.. around 240 or so, replaced the radiator the next day and shes ran fine ever since.
