OdieTurbo's 87 Sport Coupe
Just starting a thread to document the maintenance/repairs and upgrades of my 1987 Camaro Sport Coupe purchased from camaro_V6_Tuner on 7/25/2013.
Just brought it home yesterday and put it in the garage.
So far the work needed is minor - here's what's next to get it back on the road:
When I finally saw the car yesterday after talking with camaro_V6_Tuner via email, I was really impressed! Yes, the right rear quarter panel is rusted, but other than that this car is virtually rust free! You can't find cars like this in NY very easily! I could also tell this car was cared for - it's not beat (even though it has 201,000 miles), it's clean, it's maintained, it's just in really good shape!
Here are some pics:

So far the work needed is minor - here's what's next to get it back on the road:
- Deal with 13 gallons of 2 year old gas.
- Replace spark plug wires.
- Replace all 4 tires.
- Diagnose turn signals not working.

The interior is in pretty good condition except for the front seats. I haven't posted pics of it yet as there are seat covers on because the front seats are in poor condition. I'll be installing 4thgen seats soon.

Re: OdieTurbo's 87 Sport Coupe
Time for an update! Here is what got done:
07/27/2013 (201,579 miles) - 4 Sumitomo HTR A/S P01 (H- or V-Speed Rated) 245/50-16 tires were mounted. Link
- New STP air filters installed.
- Wonder bar installed.
- Optima "Red Top" battery installed. Has only top posts so I purchased adapters.
- Wired in "Battery Tender Jr." to battery terminals. This way I can plug it in and top it off.
- Lubricated all hinges and latches, wiped down all rubber with silicone spray.
- Topped up tank with fresh gas (about 5 gallons, so other 10 is 2-year-old gas).
07/29/2013 (201,586 miles) - Swapped out gauges for '82 Berlinetta gauges. New mileage = 122,496. Difference of 79,090.
- Replaced dry-rotted spark plug wires with MSD wires.
- Installed 4thgen power driver's seat from 1995 Firebird. Much more comfy! I still need to use fabric paint and paint all 4 and install them.
08/03/2013 (122,640 miles) - Oil & Filter change.
- Oxygen sensor replaced.
- Horn fixed. I repaired the contacts on the steering wheel and ordered a Dorman HELP! replacement spring contact.
- Driven enough to add 9 more gallons of fresh gas.

08/04/2013 (122,650 miles) - Wired up a harness and installed a stereo out of a mid '90s GM car, I don't even remember the model. Looks like a stock one with the small equalizer and tape deck.

I've been debating that... unfortunately the seats I have are tan. I'll have to give it some more thought.

08/07/2013 (miles n/a) - I removed the A/C compressor as it has been disconnected for a while. Much easier to access parts of the engine now! And yes, once removed, you do have to move the power steering pump up slightly.
Here's the link on moving the power steering pump.

08/07/2013 (miles n/a) - I ordered a bunch of new parts from RockAuto! I found out about their RSS feed for Closeouts - You won't believe all the stuff I got for so cheap!
- AC Delco Serpentine Belt $12
- AC Delco Distributor Cap $5
- AC Delco Distributor Rotor $3
- AC Delco Fuel Filter $9
- Bendix Wheel Cylinders $3.50
- Bendix Caliper Hardware Kit $1
- KYB Shocks $20
08/09/2013 (miles n/a) - The shocks arrived!
The rest is set to arrive today or tomorrow.
Sunday I plan on dropping the tank for the new fuel pump I have to put in. I'll also replace the exhaust and shocks while I'm under there. I've got a Dynomax Super Turbo exhaust system sitting in my basement that I bought a year ago when they had a $100 rebate at Summit - it should sound awesome!

drop the tank, hehehe watch out for Murphys Law, why I have an access hole, I can go in at any time and have had to several times. And don't use the quick connect clamps for wiring the fuel pump that came with them.
here is my recent list
spent at RockAuto $216.46
2 RAYBESTOS innrer tie rods
2 RAYBESTOS outer tie rods
2 RAYBESTOS adjuster sleves
1 RAYBESTOS center link
1 RAYBESTOS idler arm
2 MONROE Sensa-Trac rear shocks
2 MONROE Sensa-Trac front struts
2 rear sway bar links
2 lower ball joints
about $40 of that was shipping as I made 4 orders over a few months, same struts were $70 at autozone only 22.95 rockauto. KYB corner better but I want a cush ride now.

When I pull it, I'll check in with you to see if you still want it. It might be a little while as I don't have the keys for the tilt column. I may have to take it to a locksmith to get the lock cylinder out.

08/18/2013 (122,798 miles) - Fuel pump installed! While I was underneath pulling the tank, I did a few other things as well:
- Distributor cap and rotor installed.
- Serpentine belt installed.
- KYB shocks installed.
- Dynomax Super Turbo exhaust system installed (minus one hanger).
- Installed 1/2" aluminum spacers for the front wheels, ordered from a site that sells circle track stuff.
- Put on a new set of Summit lug nuts (nice and shiny!)
- Caliper hardware kit installed (it had worn o-rings and the calipers would rattle over bumps).
- Fuel filter installed.
- Fuel tank coated with POR-15.

Re: OdieTurbo's 87 Sport Coupe
yes it dose take up some. We use Lock tite on bearings and shafts in balers when i has just a small bit of play in it. It will take up the gap in most cases where the shaft is wore just a tad. My buddy that dose all my milling work showed me that trick. Honestly i dont use locktite on anything that i dont have to use it on. Only use it when it is called for or recommended. But Thanks for the complement Stewie

So this is the car the MAF clamp went to. I'm glad I could help with this build! Know what you are going to do for the rust? It depends but I may be able to cut a panel off my parts car for you. I have plenty of loose parts I'm still storing in it right now.

Oh yeah! Thanks for that clamp! Much better than the zip-ties I was using As for the rust, I was planning on getting a new quarter panel for it. I didn't figure I could find a rust-free used one around here.

The Car I have has the rust free panel you are looking for but I'm all the way down in Florida. Depending on how much if it you wanted I could consider shipping it too. it looks like you would just need all the sheet metal that runs behind the wheel. It would be worth a try to find something closer to you though.

Re: OdieTurbo's 87 Sport Coupe
10/20/2013 (124,027 miles) - I mounted up a set of factory rear louvers I got for $100! The hardware is missing so I had to fabricate the brackets. The first try yielded some that fit okay, but I'd like something that grips tighter to the window and uses dzus fasteners. The set I made use elevator bolts and nylock nuts. After finding pics of the correct hardware here on the forums, I've got a guy at work making the 4 side brackets. I also just purchased what appear to be an excellent match for the factory dzus fasteners.
If this works well, I'll start a thread and give all the details; what to buy, how to bend it, how to put it all together, etc.
I'll also get a 2nd set made to go with the other set of factory louvers I have so I can sell them with the hardware. If anyone is interested, send me a PM. They are for a rear hatch with no wiper and no 3rd brake light on the outside of the glass.

We'll wait. We also know how awesome louvers look on fastback cars. If I'm not mistaken they will keep the car cooler in the summer because you don't have as much the sunlight entering the car.

Re: OdieTurbo's 87 Sport Coupe
11/09/2013 (124,320 miles) - The Camaro is up for the winter! I've taken the steering column out and am swapping parts over to the tilt column I've got. Currently I'm waiting on a high-beam rod follower that was missing from my tilt column. I'll update again when I've got it in.
It'll probably be pretty slow in this thread until spring

A turbo would make this thread pretty interesting!
Still up for sale if you're interested.

"still needs a quarter panel (or a lot of body work)."
Like I said I might be able to donate you the quarter off my car. Have you had any luck trying to find one local to you?

Not yet, she's up for the winter. My garage isn't heated so I won't be doing much work on her until spring.

11/16/2013 (124,320 miles) - Finally installed the 1982 Tilt Steering Column from my old Berlinetta! I had some minor wiring issues trying to get the wipers to work but I've got that sorted out. I think...
