Fuse 17..what if I yank it?

Ok, I know this post may be better suited for another board....but I like the V-6ers. I don't trust the other guys. Ok..I think it's fuse # 17.. It's the third row across, and third down..it's a 20 amper. It controls the dome light, cigarette lighter, some power accessories that I don't have, and the car's computer command control system. Now, I keep blowing this fuse....power surges rom a cigarette lighter power adapter. I drove just today for about 5 minutes with the fuse blown..and you know what? My car shifted smoother! The shifts were quicker and softer without any of the harsh noises I get from 1st to 2nd.. Ok, so the question first is...do you know why the hell it might be doing this? I replaced the fuse immediately after and drove it again the same way, and it was shifting badly again. The second question is..do you know exactly what this blown out fuse might take out in the car's computer system? And what if I leave the fuse out? I don't use anything it controls. Would this cause some nasty side-effects I'm not prepared for? Thanks as usual guys.

The car is a 91 3.1 liter V-6 automatic.

No, a short circuit is blowing your fuse. Fuses don't blow for no reason. Find out what that fuse really controls and the check the wiring for damage.

There's so much wiring in these cars, I wouldn't even know where to start. As I said, the fuse controls the cigarette lighter, the domelight, some power things I don't have such as power windows, and "computer command control". As far as wires go..too many of them to pick through without knowing. When I got the car, there was no cover plate for the fuse box, it's just open. And wires are EVERYWHERE.. There's one green wire dangling down that's stripped and exposed in one part and pretty badly damaged, but it's not connected to anything. Just has a white plastic single-slot end. A few other wires run into this huge wire terminal that could hold ten more, but doesn't connect to anything. My cassette player connection is pretty bad too. The exposed end of a cheap speaker wire, jammed into an open slot in the fuse box. Can you say 'hotwired like 15 year old christmas lights"??

Well, i had the same problem too. I just replaced the fuse after 2 or 3 times and it has never blewn on me again. But it is weird for them to just blow like that. I was just driving down the road and it did that. And another time is when the car stalled.

I think that is the same fuse I blew about 4 times within 4 months. It's for the radio too I think. I just put in a 25 amp fuse and it hasn't blown since.

Hmm..I dunno. I know for sure that the fuse doesn't control my radio.. Although, I don't have a fuse controlling my radio considering it's wired directly into the fusebox itself..it doesn't have any protection...NOT GOOD. Who knows...but I do know for sure that the book recommends a 20 amp fuse. The only thing I've put in it since I've gotten it is 20amp oem fuses.

PS-Car wouldn't start today! Fuel pump went..that's it. Solenoid never clicked...starter didn't do anything. Let it sit for 15 minutes, turned over and started without a single problem or delay. POS! I'm thinking it may be something in my ignition tumbler column, considering it's about 1 centimeter too far out..it doesn't hug the side, it juts out. Maybe there's an interruption there...but...who knows. Wish me an inexpensive repair!

Talk about a merry Christmas huh??
