1988 IROC-Z: The Never Ending Project

History; This is a hard top car which came equipped with a 305ci LB9 V8 with Tuned Port Injection which is rated at 220HP and 290FT/TQ and mated to a T-5 manual transmission turning a 3.08 posi 10 bolt rear end. This car came to me pretty much fully loaded which include tilt, cruise control, power windows, power locks, air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, deluxe interior, leather steering wheel, leather shifter, leather e-brake handle, cloth deluxe seats, and roll-up cargo shade. The grey interior came to me absolutely mint, the drivers seat looked as though it had never been sat in. This car also came equipped with some other goodies such as the larger sway bars, iroc wonder bar, quick ratio steering, 16" aluminum wheels, aluminum rear drums, and a posi rear end.

Acquisition; I bought this car in August 2005 with 70,000 original kms. The car had two previous owners, but it has never been winter driven. Both previous owners always kept this car in a garage and under a car cover. At the time of purchase the car did not run very well and it was in storage for the previous seven or eight years. After a quick inspection I jumped at the opportunity to purchase this car for $5000 CDN. The car was in an unmolested state when I purchased it. The only modifications it had were K&N filters, an ADS Superchip, a custom cat back exhaust with dual chrome tips, and the stock 16" IROC rims were stripped and professionally polished and wrapped in Toyo tires. The car came with all the original manuals and paperwork, maintenance history, everything except the original window sticker (damn!) Two more extras I got with this car is an original GM "IROC" bra and GM car cover. After taking this car home I had to replace the alternator, battery, starter, computer and chip, MAF, MAF burn-off relay, and fuel pump. Finally, the original low mileage car ran as it should. Then the mods began...

Engine; Stock LB9 bottom end, this hydraulic roller block has never been out of the car. LT4 Corvette Hot Cam (.525/.525" With 1.6 Roller Rockers, 112 Lobe Separation, 219 Intake / 228 Exhaust Duration @ .050), Aluminum L98 '113' Heads From A 1991 Corvette (Mildly Ported), 1.6 GM Performance Parts Self-Aligning Roller Rockers, TPIS Bigmouth Intake (Moderately Ported and Powder Coated Black), SLP Runners (Semi-Siamesed, Moderately Ported, and Polished) [currently removed], Plenum (Mega Ported and Polished) [currently removed], 58mm Throttle Body (Polished with a Polished "IROC-Z" Billet Aluminum Cover) [currently removed], Polished Fuel Rail with TPIS Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator (Set to 46 PSI at Idle), SLP Cold Air Induction Kit w/K&N Filter [currently removed], TPIS Air Foil, AIR Pump Delete Pulley, All Smog Equipment Delete.

Exhaust; Hooker 2460-1 Ceramic Headers, Custom 3" Y Pipe, Catalytic Converter Delete, 3" Exhaust back to a Magnaflow 14267 Polished Stainless Steel Muffler, Magnaflow Polished Stainless Steel 15° Slash Cut Tips with Rolled Edge.

Drivetrain; B&M Ripper Shifter topped with a nice Spun Aluminum Shift Knob, 1LE 3" Aluminum Drive Shaft, Borg-Warner 9-Bolt Posi Rear End with Disc Brakes, 3:45 Gears, T/A Aluminum Girdle.

Suspension; Prothane Bushings Kit, Eibach Sportline Springs, KYB GR-2 Shocks and Struts, WS6 36mm and 24mm Sway Bars, Spohn Lower Control Arms, Hotchkis Strut Tower Brace, Hotchkis Panhard Bar, EZ Cam XR Camber Bolts for Proper Correction of Camber for Lowered Vehicles.

Brakes; Corvette C5 Z06 Brakes for the Front with LS1 Zinc Washed Rotors (to fit 16" IROC Wheels) and GM Performance Parts Ceramic Pads, Earl's Braided Stainless Steel Brake Lines All Around, Rear Brakes are Currently Non-PBR Disc with Low Dust Organic Pads, B&M Roll Control/Line Lock, Currently Assembling 1LE PBR Brakes for the Rear; Torch Red Powder Coated Calipers with 11.6" Zinc Washed Rotors and Bendix Titanium Metallic Pads.

Appearance; Car was repainted factory colour in 2003 and all decals were replaced with factory pieces (Before I Purchased This Car). '92 Blisters and Bowtie Grill, Clear Side Markers, Street Glow 'Gold Series' Purple Neon [currently removed], 5% Tint Rear & Windshield Strip, 45% Tint Side Windows [currently removed], GTS Tail Light Blackouts [currently removed], and New GM OEM Front Marker Lights.

Rims & Tires; For Normal Driving, Summer, and Car Shows this IROC sits on 17" Boyd Coddington 'Magneato' Rims: Fronts are 17x8 with 4.5" back spacing and an offset of 0, the Rears are 17x10 with 5.73" back spacing and an offset of 6. Tires are Yokohama AVS ES100, Fronts are 245/45ZR17 and rears are 275/40ZR17 (Currently burning/tearing off Fulda Carat Extremo ZR Tires). For winter storage or when I want to roll around with the stock look I replace the original 16" Double Stripe IROC Rims. Tires are Toyo Proxies 245/50ZR16's on all four corners. I have a couple more sets of rear rims (double stripe IROC rims and white powder coated 91/92 Z-28 rims) which I use for burnouts and 'having fun' with free tires.

Interior; Corbeau TRS 'Wide' Black Cloth Seats [currently removed], 240 KM/H Speedometer with Correct Mileage Roll Swap, Autometer Monster 5" Carbon Fiber Tach w/Shift Light, Autometer 2 1/16" Triple Pod mounted on A Pillar loaded with; Innovate Wideband O2 LC-1 / XD-16 Standalone Gauge Kit, Autometer Carbon Fiber Water Temperature Gauge, Autometer Carbon Fiber Oil Pressure Gauge. Momo Steering Wheel and Billet 2401 Momo Adapter, Nikon Gold And Chrome Pedals, Dual Map Light Rear View Mirror, Dash Pad Cover.

Audio; Alpine IVA-D106 7" Touch Screen DVD/CD/MP3/IPOD/DIVX Audio Video Player, Kicker 700.5 5-Channel Amplifier (85w x 4 - A/B Class, 420w x 1 - D Class), Q-Form Kick Panels loaded with Rockford Fosgate Fanatic Q 6.5" Components Front, Custom 6x9 Plate loaded with Infinity Kappa 6.5" Components Rear, Custom Sub Box in Hatch Well which is housing Two 10" JL Audio Subwoofers.

Other; Spohn Sub-Frame Connectors, Battery Relocated to Hatch Area, Ultima Red Top Battery, All "Free" Mods. Currently running a Custom $6E Prom Programmed and Burnt myself along with the help and guidance of a great guy I met on Thridgen.org, thanks Glenn!

Currently Working On; Assembling 1LE PBR Brakes for the Rear with 11.6" Zinc Washed Rotors (Sending Out Calipers for Torch Red Powder Coating to Match the C5 Z06 Front Brakes), March Power and Amp Series Under Drive Pulleys, SVO 30# Fuel Injectors, UMI Lower Control Arm Relocation Brackets. The Air Conditioning needs to be recharged and the Cruise Control needs some attention, everything else works 100%.

Next; Port the SHI!T out of the Aluminum L98 heads, Replace Headliner, Hotchkis Tie Rod Sleeves, carpet the sub box so it is stock appearing, T-56 Swap, eventually swap AFR Heads, Throttle Body Coolant Bypass, MSD Ignition, 12-Bolt Rear. Considering Hella Glass Headlight Housings for a H4 Headlight Conversion fitted with 6000k HID's, Diamond Style Front Marker Lights, 18" Rims, and Air Bags.

In The Garage; I have a fully rebuilt 350ci L98 Roller Motor bored .030 over. I'm debating on whether or not I want to stroke this engine to a 383 or leave it as a 355. Once that decision is made I will have to contemplate which heads and cam to use on this project. My goal is to have a torque monster which can easily lay down rubber, be a very quick stop light dragger, yet be tame enough to be considered a 'daily driver'. Perhaps I'll drop the compression and go 'forced induction'.. who knows? The car is currently sitting with about 78,000kms on it, so I'm in no rush to tear out the original low milage motor quite yet.

Videos; Burnouts: Before Mods- One After Mods- One, Two. Lopey Idle- One, Two. Magnaflow Exhaust- One. Burnouts Uncut- One. NEW October 2008 Burnouts- One.

In Conclusion; This car is my weekend warrior. Never winter driven. Always garage stored under a car cover. I have done all the installations, modifications, and wrenching myself and I have kept every part to return this car to 100% stock.

1991 Z-28: New Beginnings

History; This is a hard top car which came equipped with a 350ci L98 V8 with Tuned Port Injection which is rated at 245HP and 345FT/TQ and mated to a 700R4 automatic transmission turning a 3.23 posi 10 bolt rear end. It is the factory Ultra Blue Metallic exterior with a Dark Medium Grey interior. This car is considered 'fully loaded' which include power adjustable driver's seat, tilt, cruise control, power windows, power locks, air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, deluxe interior, leather steering wheel, leather e-brake handle, leather shifter knob, cloth deluxe seats, and roll-up cargo shade. This car also came equipped with performacnce options such as the larger sway bars, quick ratio steering, 16" aluminum wheels, dual catalytic converters, and a posi rear end.

Acquisition; I bought this car in October 2007 with 151,000 miles on it for $3,500 USD from an add here on thirdgen. I had this car transported across country and took delivery on April 28th, 2008. Originally a Florida car, I purchased this rust free vehicle from a friend in Virginia. Other then regular maintainence and replacement parts, a Black Widow alarm system with keyless entry, aftermarket CD player and speakers, this car is stock. Being a well used higher milage car, everything will have to be touched on and brought to "like new" specs, thus a new beginning.

Engine; Stock L98, as far as I know this engine has never been out of the car.

Exhaust; Stock N10 dual catalytic converter exhaust. I've removed both cats and installed a custom cat-back 3" exhaust which consists of a Magnaflow 14267 Polished Stainless Steel Muffler and Magnaflow Polished Stainless Steel 15° Slash Cut Tips with Rolled Edge.

Drivetrain; Stock 700R4, stock 10-bolt G80 G92 rear end with posi 3:23. I'm working on purchasing a Pro-Built Street/Strip 700R4 with a Vigilante 2800RPM Stall converter for this car. I also intend to install an aluminum driveshaft, B&M Console Megashifter or similar, T/A Aluminum Girdle, and possibly a gear swap.

Suspension; Stock, which include 34mm and 22mm sway bars. I intend to install a wonderbar, Prothane bushings kit, Eibach Prokit springs, Koni shocks and struts, Spohn LCA's and Relocation Brackets, Hotchkis Strut Tower brace, and an aftermarket panhard bar. I'll also look into replacing the sway bars with WS6 36/24mm combo.

Brakes; Stock Disc in front, drums in rear. I've recently rebuilt the rear brakes and have upgraded to aluminum rear drums. I plan to purchase and install a 4 wheel disc Baer brakes swap kit and stainless steel brake lines for this vehicle.

Appearance; Stock, I've installed clear side markers with orange bulbs. I will probably order new OEM front marker lenses. I'll most likely tint the back window with 20%. The car will have the front fascia repainted to bring up the appearence, or perhaps a complete repaint in the factory Ultra Blue Metallic colour, or something similar. I'm currently debating on aftermarket wheels.

Rims & Tires; This car is currently sitting on 18" C5 Z06 Wheels made by AFS. These rims are 18x9.5 with a +56mm offset and 7.4" backspace, wrapped in Kumho Ecsta Supra 275/35ZR18's on all four corners. To mount these wheels to the car, I had to install 2" Skulte adapters. I also have the stock 16" 91-92 style Z-28 wheels which are wrapped in 245/50R16 Fuzion ZRi tires. I'm thinking of changing to 18" Chrome C6 5-spoke rims in the future.

Interior; Stock, I've installed a dash pad cover and a 240 KM/H Speedometer. I've replaced the dashpad with a nicer uncracked piece and I've recently replaced the steering wheel and air bag. Eventually I'll replace the front seats, headliner, carpet, sail panels, sun visors, and console lid. This should bring the interior upto my standards and back to 'like new' condition. Eventually a 5" monster tach and A pillar gauges will find their way into this vehicle. I'm considering a gauge overlay package and aftermarket pedals.

Audio; Pioneer CD Player with Clarion aftermaket speakers. The last thing on my list will be replacing and upgrading the stereo. Most likely an Alpine MP3 deck will find its way into the dash. Replacement aftermarket speakers, amp(s), and a sub(s) will find a home inside eventually.

Other; Spohn Sub-Frame Connectors, Black Widow Alarm with Keyless Entry.

Currently Working On; I'm currently doing a full tune up and sourcing misc parts to bring this car to my standards. I've purchased Hooker Long Tube 2210-1 Ceramic Headers and I intend to install them this year. Awaitng a Hotchkis Strut Tower Bar to arrive.

Next; Purchasing new headliner/visors/sail panels replacement kit and a new carpet will come later this summer along with finding a replacement console lid. Once interior is cleaned up and fresh, I'll start to work on other parts of this vehicle.

In The Garage; I've got 4th gen grey cloth seats for this car, along with some misc interior pieces, and I have a set of rear PRB disc brakes which may find a home on this vehicle. I've got a rebuilt L98 350 sitting in my shop which may find its way inbetween the fenders, however this may be the perfect vehicle for a LS1/T56 swap!!

Videos; NEW Exhaust: Before And After- One. Burnout: Before Mods- One.

In Conclusion; I've wanted an IROC since I seen them new on the dealership lot when I was in high school. The 1988 IROC listed above is the third F-body (the third 1988 IROC actually) and by far the nicest IROC I've owned. However I've always loved the body styling of the 1991-92 Z-28's, now I've got one. Say hello to F-Body number four.
