My first expedition into the world of restoration. My mom had one identical to this when I was in middle school and she sold it two years before I could drive. She admits she hated it. It gave her nothing but trouble, but I've determined that the source of her problems was mostly the computer, which mine no longer has.
The previous owner (who intended to make it into KITT) took out the computer, put in a vacuum advance, carburetor...just left in the GM Stock intake, which I've since replaced with the Edelbrock 2101 intake. He did not, however, replace the hood support struts :? It also had no locks, couldn't get the trunk open without a screwdriver, and the headliner was...wait, I can't use that word here. I've since replaced the headliner and sun visors with the correct color. I'm still uncertain of what to do with the sail panels... I have new ones from Hawks (thanks!!), but I am hoping to find some way to use the old panels with the new fabric. I refuse to use VELCRO. I have a new dash waiting to go in, and big plans. Now, if only I had the money...isn't that always the way?
Now, how did I get into Trans Am? My Dad has an all-original '79 with the Pontiac 6.6L Pontiac 400 with 4-spd manual tranny, with 65k miles. He's never had to replace anything, but since his interior is red, he will need to start that process soon, or pass the car on to MEEEEEE. So, I figured I'd better get crackin' on restoring so I can learn on this bird. So far, I've done pretty decently...there's just one or two parts that escape my grasp and I know those are hard to find. So, that's my story. Feel free to ask me anything and I'll tell you what I can. The PHS Documentation is on its way! | |
