I have 18s in the back and 17s in the front and have had NOTHING but compliments. I wouldn't go any bigger than 18s though unless it's strictly for cruising.

I believe sickness91 is running 20" rims. If you do a search you should find a few pics.

Personally I would not go higher that 18". You will find the 20's run REAL HARD. Our car were not designed for 20" rims and they do not suit the look either.

Good luck..........

i would go 18s. i think 20s are alittle to big. and i would think the tires would cost alot more for 20s then 18s. im not to sure tho.
whatever floats your boat tho :P

Where did you get the idea they were designed for 18's, or even 17's????? I'd like to know that. 16's are nice, 17's are on the edge but can be pulled off if done properly, but 18's are just hideous no matter how you do it. Very dis-proportional to the car. And pictures cant show proportionality so dont waste your time posting them. I've seen 18's on a 3rd gen fbody in person and its just horrible. I hope I never see one with 20's, I cant even imagine it in a positive way.

I just wish someone could explain to me exactly what the functional purpose is to having huge wheels. Looks is not an excuse cause there are plenty of normal size wheels to choose from that fit any taste other than.....oh snap, I better shut up now.

Wow, what a piece of work you are

Obviously you have no sense of style judging by your comments and the pics of your car.
Who determines what a vehicle was designed for? You? Or are you saying that because it didn't come that way from the factory? Should we not have 400HP motors under the hood either?
The reality is that there are many more (nicer) rim options when you jump to 17 & 18s compared to 16s.
I agree that 18s is the biggest I would go due to driveability issues.
Bottom line is the guy was asking for pictures and all you showed him was that you're a troll

thanks DAnny T . this was just for pics not rants!
im an airline pilot....i dont do cars. So this is the easiest way for me to see what looks best. To me, 20's arent the answer for the thirdgen after a little pic research. But 18's fill in that fender gap nicely! And thats eye candy to a city slicker like myself.

Re: 18" or 20" rim/wheel pics. HAVING a hard time here

look fellas, being a troll isnt my intentions here. What I'm trying to say is that 18's are just not good on these cars, and any pics in the world can show you what you want if shot right. No way can a picture put a set of wheels into perspective. Its something a person has to see in person. I HAVE seen 18's on a 3rd gen and like I said it was terrible. them being terrible had nothing to do with style and everything to do with size. TOO BIG. Not to mention the ride on 18's would be trecherous.

If getting wheels is done simply to get rid of fender gap, then dont do it. Get a lowering kit, it will look much better. I have my TA lowered 2" and with 16" wheels the fender gap is basically gone. Looks great.

Im not a photographer so how does that reflect on my sense of styling , and nor do I care if my sig pic is to your standards, it was just a pic I snapped when I got the car and nothing more.

But if pictures are what your after here ya go:

The following pic is a Bird thats been destroyed with 22's, and if you lower it about 1 inch, this is pretty much what 20's would look like. Just throwing a set of wheels on these cars that big is not appealing. Why would you want to raise the height of the car. Thats exactly what you are basically doing, and thats the main reason it looks like crap.

im not a fan of huge rims eather.
there alittle gangsta for me lol.
but if you like 20 inchers. or even bigger. i say go for it.
you do what you like with your car
frick you can jack the car up and turn it into an off road car if you like lol.

Re: 18" or 20" rim/wheel pics. HAVING a hard time here

I'd be curious of how much those two cars were dropped???

They both appear to be lowered.

The one with 17's was ok but only because of the drop, I still think the 18's are too big but the drop does help pull it off.

Just throwing on a set of wheels isnt going to make it look like those cars unless you lower the car too.

I don't know of many (if any) people that would put wheels on an F-Body without lowering it too.

I THINK it really funny how your gonna waist your sweet time to show us a yellow BIRD WITH NO GFX on 22's. NO GFX and lambo doors? HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! Come on mannnnnnnn. u reallly cut your lunch out out at work to finalize a point. haha No hardfeelings ma man.

like i said i realize after a little Picture research that 20's are not the answer. (opinion). But any real stylist knows that big wheels go on Big Body old skool rides (your choice of BAGS or SPRINGS) and if its NEW skool then it must be slammed with GFX(maybe even a body kit for agressiveness) to look right......

Chip Fooses famous phrase is " My job is to take the ugly out of this car." Thats all im tryin to do. So far the pics and info is steering me in the right direction.

im goin with deep dished 18's (approx 5 to 7in lip) in the rear and 17's in da front( fat lip too)......end of story.

Re: 18" or 20" rim/wheel pics. HAVING a hard time here

As long as you don't mind not being able to rotate your tires, I think you'll be pretty happy with the 17/18 look on your car. I have 18's all the way around on my car and am very happy with the look and ride. It actually rides MUCH better than I expected it to! My car could certainly use a 1" or 2" drop, but the extremely poor roads up here in Maine prevent it.

18's look fine...I don't care for rims much bigger, but I've seen it pulled off pretty well, and it's all up to personal preference!

Well it's true. The bigger you go with the wheels the more out of proportion everythign gets. The fender gap, ride height, and tire vs wheel aspect ratio all start to shift in directions that just look odd and out of proportion.

not to mention with 20s the ride height goes up. More than that, the tiny, tiny aspect ratio of the tires compared to the ride height just makes it look really, really goofy. It works on race cars because the height of the tire sidewall is still less than the ride height and still less than the fender gap. That's not the case with our cars.

Re: 18" or 20" rim/wheel pics. HAVING a hard time here

these are just my opinions so take them for what theyre worth.

On our cars there are a few things that youll find most people agree on.

Firstly most people will agree that our cars dont look right with different size fronts then backs. Factory suspension actually has a reverse rake with the front end being higher, our cars were made to sit level not raked, so in my opinion sticking with one size is best.

As far as what size look up kandied car, he has a gorgeous set of 18's on it. I know i saw one picture outside the corvette museum of his car nose to nose with a car that has 17's and the 18's fill up the wheel well a lot nicer without being overly big.

As far as handling 17" is probably the best, anything bigger you start to lose too much sidewall, and our cars having a solid rear axel need a little bit of flex in the sidewall to handle best.

So long story short my opinion is 18's for show, 17's for go

Acutally Air ride Tech does make a kit for our cars now! Its not cheap, but nothing that is really worth rarely is. irocbirdbuilder installed their kit and it works great. Search him if you want to see install pics.

Re: 18" or 20" rim/wheel pics. HAVING a hard time here

I dont see any problem with having different wheels front to back.

When I was driving my 90 Bird I had 16's in back and 15's in front. I got a lot of positive comments and only one or 2 bad comments, both from ricers. My town is full of ricers.

yeah I know its awkward with the wheels turned left but I'm not a photographer and didnt catch it.

Re: 18" or 20" rim/wheel pics. HAVING a hard time here

I swapped from 17's to 18's this year, and I actually think the car handles better. I am having to correct some rearend geometery this off season, LCA relocation brackets, and adj LCA and panhard bar. But for the most part the car actually rides much better.

Huge wheels do look horrible, 17 is a sweet spot in my opinion if you want bigger. 18s look good with a slight drop and proper tire size... Anything bigger is a bit on the retarded side. I have 17 inch rims on mine below, 245/45 front, 250/55 rear.

Steve, beautiful car. How much did you drop the front and rear? Has the spacers affected the ride any? does the rear or front rub under compression or turning?

Re: 18" or 20" rim/wheel pics. HAVING a hard time here

My car on 20's a few years ago. with lowering springs. i loved the look. it drove fine too. didnt ride like crap. was going to sell the car, so i sold my parts from it. ended up not sellin it.

I WOULD do 20's again in a heartbeat. i just ordered wheels for my 92 Z, i went with 18's for now, but want 20's in the future for it.

ive got 2 4th gens with 20's on 1 and 19's on the other.

if done right, big wheels are amazing. but not like that f-bird above. thats something we dont like to see.

Re: 18" or 20" rim/wheel pics. HAVING a hard time here

I actually took the wheels off of my 57' Chevy today and mounted them on my Camaro to get an idea if these are what I want for this car or not. I think 18" front and rear will be my choice. The offset is wrong in the front for the Camaro and the wheels look too small, but a bit more tire should solve that. Don't listen to the folks who insist that 18" or bigger is WRONG, go with what YOU want! I think a 20 is too big, but am never going to tell someone they are wrong for liking them.... Opinions are like a$$holes, everyone has one.

those rears look sick. but both rears on one side of the car so it has 20's front and back for a picture.

those fronts are too small looking. dont stick out enough or the tire is too small. but the rears look great

I already put them back on my 57'... The rear did look really good, just a touch too big for me though. I think a 19" may look good if it was wide enough, I may just go down to Intro and have a few mounted up to get an idea before I commit to buying another set, they were not cheap !

Thanks for the compliment,

Jason

i run 18's and airride and its a killer look, i think 18's on stock ride height looks like crap, but keep in mind that air ride SLAMS my car and they look unreal!!!!! personally i think my car at ride height looks iffy with the big ones but i slam it and my point is made 18's were the smartest thing i ever did for the look and stance of the car, rides great but keep in mind i ride on air and it is comfortable

My car just came out of the paint booth and got a set of Z06 replicas, 17" front and 18" rears, with 255 45 17's and 275 40 18's.

I think it looks great, makes sense because I picked em out, LOL!

Re: 18" or 20" rim/wheel pics. HAVING a hard time here

how does going to a 20 inch rim make the car sit higher if the car had 15s with a 26 inch tall tire and you went to a 20 and still have a 26 inch tall tire why would it sit higher

just a question as you can get low profile tires

on a side note i would rather have 18s on my camaro but think bigger rims are good for trucks

thanks

I think the key is that larger rims make the car LOOK like it's sitting higher. It's an optical illusion, and it just doesnt fit right.

Teal CAR- DEEP DISH 18's - Air ride- Fresh Paint......DAMN

irocbirdbuilder u got one SICKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK ride. like i said...im a city kid and that look is appealing to me......

some of yall should take note on the style of that car. IM not saying everyone should go with a copied look. BUt it is hot!

opinons on looks: (hope i didnt jack my own thread) but oh well

Everybody on the tread for the most part "IN MY OPINON" has a better lookin rims when deep-dished and chrome polished lip. SO that is a MUST have for me. And i think we may all agree on that. Some of us dont like the SHOW look and that understandable.

non deep lipped rims i think compliment Fast cars that simply look fast STANDING still without GFX and low stance.

18" deep rims, tint, airBAGS if i cant find them. or Sportline springs to compliment my RS's stance.

mr iroc.....we would love to see the 18x11's

Re: 18" or 20" rim/wheel pics. HAVING a hard time here

Alot of people will say any bigger than 18 is too much or even 18s are too much. The biggest reason is that not too many places make an 18" with a third gen fitment (different offset front and rear). And no one with a 19" unless you go custom offset which is pricey! Most people will settle for just a wheel with the wrong offset which ends up looking like ***. I personally think that the third gen has too much of an even sized body front to rear to have staggered sized wheels, but thats just my 2 pennies. I am currently running 18x10s on the rear (and they do tuck) and 18x9s in the front. And yes, I do think that 20s are too big. I think that 19 is the max that will pass as attractive.
