Question on Slicks

It's that time for my noobish questions again.

In just a month or so from now, I'm going to be putting a BTO level 2 700R4 into the car along with a boss hog 2800 - 3200 converter.

Now, about a month after that is done I will putting Nitto drag radials on the back. I have only one question left for the deciding factor. I have been talking with someone on here and from what I have gathered:

- A 275/60-15 tire will fit stock 15x7 rims with no clearance issues (Even during cornering). Not the best traction in the world with the 7" width but will work decent until I can afford the 15x8 Centerlines.
- Should offer good traction for street use when paired with good street tires up front and excellent traction off the line compared to street tires (Hey, It's GOT to be better than the bald Yokohama's on there right now in all categories).
- Once the new rims are purchased, a 15x8 rim with 4.5" backspacing should have no clearance issues and worse case scenario, will require a little bashing near the LCA.

So, the only thing left I have to decide on is whether to get 275/60 or 275/50. I have seen pictures of both, and both look great. But I'm just making sure the 275/60 would not be too much in cases of clearance during cornering and passengers in the car over a 275/50.

The other thing that deeply concerns me, is how the rear end will hold up. Now bear in mind, this is not a track car. I don't constantly drag. The only time I would get hardcore froggy is if someone revved at me from a light. In which case I would compression brake and let er rip. I know that these tires have drastically better traction, and that has me really concerned since the rear would not be able to just spin the wheels and dump It's load rather than taking the heat. The car has 150,000 original miles on it, and other than being a 3.23 10 bolt with a chrome diff cover, I know absolutely nothing about the rear end other than so far it has not given me any problems. To give an idea of what my car is packing, here is a list of things I know have been done to the car:

- Boxed style LCA's and a Spohn panhard bar. I have UMI subframe connectors not yet welded to the car but very soon.
- BTO level 2 700R4 with an ACC boss hog 2800 - 3200 stall. TransGo shiftkit to come in near future.
- Engine was replaced with a brand new 305 longblock just 3500 miles ago. TPI with FULLY (runners, blocks and all) ported plenum and SLP runners (I know the base is still a restriction so hush I will take care of this in due time!).
- Full headerback exhaust, As well as other little inexpensive and negligible modifications such as K&N filters and Accel wires with Iridium plugs.

I know the smartest idea is to "take it easy", and I agree. I just hate trying to resist the urge to get froggy (My number one favorite thing to do is take off hard from stops. Not a full throttle launch but I do like the feeling of the seat in my back), and am trying to get a general understanding of what this rear can handle since It's basically the only other thing I can think of that could go catastrophically wrong with this car. Also, what sort of mods would everyone here suggest to substantially increase the power handling capability of the rear? Preferrably on the inexpensive side.

The 305 is gonna be the perm engine for this car. In due time I do plan on building it up, but have come to the realization that 300 - 350 RWHP will probably be the numbers that I will be laying down at the end of the day, which is perfectly fine for this cars intended use.

Thanks guys!

Re: Question on Slicks

Could a moderator please fix the title.

I just noticed I put "slicks" in the title when these tires are in fact not slicks.

Re: Question on Slicks

I doubt youd have an rear probs if you just occasionally have fun with it. If you just dont feel comfortable with it you can try to find a Borg Warner. I believe they are the next step up in strength but are a pain in the *** to buy parts for. Cant offer any opinion on tires tho cause ive never looked into it.

Re: Question on Slicks

since its a primarily street car, id say that you are fine on the rear.
the rear should be able to hold up to a 305 just fine. thats the way the factory designed it.
the 350 will start breaking rears, even in stock form, but i believe you should be ok unless you do some serious power adding.

as for your tires, id normally say that when drag racing, you want the tallest tire you can make fit, but since this is mostly a street car, then you might be better off with the 50 series tires. its hard to say.
how often do you really have people in the back seat anyway?
nobody will ride in mine which is fine with me lol.
