cheap good tires?

ok, i have a a few questions you all might be able to help me with. i need new tires. desperately. my car is right now sitting in the garage, due to me being 1200 odd miles away, for college, and the tires are the ones that were on the car when i got it last may or so, and they are dry rotted to hell and have little tread left. and one is completely flat. i decided just to get new tires. also im getting a set of 16" IROC rims off of an 87. so now i need to decide on some tires, preferably fairly cheap, being in college and all, and that my car will be sitting in the garage, at least for the rest of this year. so the questions ive got are, do you know of any cheap good tires? and right now i have 235/55R16s on my car, should i keep that size or go to 245/50R16s? if i do change the size will i have to recalibrate the speedo, or will it not make that much of a difference?
i worked at a pep boys for 8 months, but i was just the low man, oil changes and tires and such, so i never bothered to learn much about tire sizes...
any help would be greatly appreciated, and cookies may be in order to who ever helps.

Re: cheap good tires?

I just purchased fierce tires from tires-easy a few weeks ago. $50 a tire and shipped very fast. I bought the riken raptors from them previously, but so far I like the kelly's better.

As far as speedo calibration, I believe 245/50/16 is the stock IROC tire size, so the tires you have now are making it read a hair slow (only a 2mph difference at 60mph).

Falken Ziex 512 tires. I've had the same set for over 3 years now with plenty of tread left.

Re: cheap good tires?

yeah, im just probably going to keep the same size all around, mainly because it is my street car. and because of the rims im getting. i do need some decent traction as in the winter we get snow, and then there is the rain... eventually i would like to get the Eagle F-1's but right now i cannot afford them, college and all..... but the goal is after i graduate and get some money to get them.

Re: cheap good tires?

Irock ZZ, Why are you running such a narrow and short tire? That's like a Grand Am or Sunfire sized tire and too small for a 3rd Gen!
I did a little research and found some 245/50R16 Firestone Firehawks at a decent price. All season and they will last and not wear out in 10,000 miles!
Here http://www.campbellperformancetires....mance_16-1.htm
I have bought from this place before and am happy with product and prices!

Re: cheap good tires?

so its been awhile.. been busy, im working on getting my A&P licensing, (for all of you non-aviation nerds, thats Airframe and Powerplant, kinda like the ASE certification for airplane mechanics) but anywho, i got my tires, and got them on. Right now my 91 RS is sitting on 87 IROC rims, with Sumitomo HTR+ tires. i must say they are very nice. only cost me around $400 (i think a little more) for all four, shipping, and road hazard. now come summer the sound system is going in. but that has nothing to do with tires, so i wont go into anymore detail.
