Re: will 4th gen wheels fit on a 3rd gen or do you need adapters
Wow. First of all you will need Wheel adapters not spacers, there is a difference. The size of the adapters will depend on what offset your wheels are. I'm running 2" adapters all around with 17x9 +46 SS wheels with 285/40/17 wheels, stock disc/drum brakes. As you can see in the flush wheels/ dumped cars (Flush wheels/ dumped cars) thread they are damn near perfectly flush.
Re: will 4th gen wheels fit on a 3rd gen or do you need adapters
adapters and spacers are the same thing. i call it an adapter when you change the pattern from like 5X5 to 5X4.75, and a spacer when you leave the pattern alone and increase space
Re: will 4th gen wheels fit on a 3rd gen or do you need adapters
No, you are wrong. Slip on wheel spacersare not the same as bolt-on wheel adapters, plain and simple. Spacers are fine if you want to move the wheels out about a 1/4" or less but any more than that and you are flirting with danger. It puts the stress too far outboard on the studs and can cause them to shear off. I have seen this happen many times at the drag strip that I work at. Adapter don't have this problem because they have pressed in studs and literally act as if the wheel has less offset.
Re: will 4th gen wheels fit on a 3rd gen or do you need adapters
so you're saying there's no such thing as a "bolt on" spacer? i know the limits of slip on spacers, just like adding shims/washers on anything mechanical or structural.. obviously too much is a bad thing. it's an iffy and pointless debate. personally i interchange the words every time
Re: will 4th gen wheels fit on a 3rd gen or do you need adapters
^^Exactly. That's what you need to put 4th gen wheels on a 3rd gen car. Bolt on spacers, because the bolt pattern is the same but the offset is different.

Re: will 4th gen wheels fit on a 3rd gen or do you need adapters
On the rear I don't think you actually need that much spacer. When I test fitted my SS wheels they almost seated on the hub. It has to do with the backspacing, There's things inside the wheels well that make contact with the wheel/tire thus not allowing it to turn or even bolt up. Up front everything is a pretty tight fit, I'm not sure if you can use anything smaller than a 2" spacer in order to clear everything up there with a 17x9 +46 wheel.

Mainly clearence issues and the difference of at least a 40mm offset... Just imagine your wheels sucked into the fenders another two inches and thats pretty much what it would look like if you didnt have any clearence issues and didn't use spacers... Ridiculous... haha
Re: will 4th gen wheels fit on a 3rd gen or do you need adapters
haha, thats what I thought, I just wanted to make sure. In case of an "emergency" where I didn't have stock wheels, I can bolt up the 4th gens and move the car around...

Nope. They won't work on the front without spacers, I tried. I never tried the rear.
Re: will 4th gen wheels fit on a 3rd gen or do you need adapters
Interesting thread.
Am running an 82 Bird with 4th gen wheels. You will need 2" more on each end. Because i wanted the 4th gen wheels AND disc brakes i installed a 4th gen rear end and had to use 2" BOLT ON ADAPTERS in the front to get the proper fit without any rubbing anywhere.
Re: will 4th gen wheels fit on a 3rd gen or do you need adapters
My god, you people have made me jump back and forth as i read down the forum.
--"OH OK, so i do just need a spacer....wait a sec... an adapter now? What the hell, OH A BOLT ON SPACER!!!"-- Who cares what the **** they are technically called. They both change the offset of the wheel!
Re: will 4th gen wheels fit on a 3rd gen or do you need adapters
......good thing to have continued reading.... just looking for some cheap 4th gen rims to save the Iroc's for showroom and plan on painting them black so the unpleasant look blends in better.
