Vibration and Centering rings
I have some annoying vibration from my car, that seems to change whenever 1 or more of the wheels are removed and put back on.
I was told by a shop that since I have aftermarket rims, which don't exactly conform to the hubs, that I needed centering rings.
Is that a given? In other words, how much does that really effect vibration, etc?
I searched, but couldn't really find anything relevant.

Re: Vibration and Centering rings
Are the wheels the proper 5x4.75 (120.65mm) If They are 5x120mm rims I would look into Hubcentric rings for sure.

Re: Vibration and Centering rings
They have two bolt patterns on them (not slotted/washer style though, they use standard acorn lugs)

hub rings are a must with aftermarket rims, some you can get away with but our cars are hubcentric not lug centric.

Re: Vibration and Centering rings
That's interesting. I've been on thirdgen for like, 4 years, and rebuilt 2 firebirds, and I had no idea.
Thanks for the info!

Re: Vibration and Centering rings
wheels for our cars are supposed to sit snugly on the hub. aftermarket wheels have all different bores to fit different vehicles thats why they come with hub rings, think of it as a "spacer" to properly adapt that larger bore to the proper size for our car.

Re: Vibration and Centering rings
Not true and you dont 'need, hubcentric rings or hubcentric wheels.
If you have dual pattern wheels they are most likely 5x120 not the proper 5 x 4.75 or 5x120.65. This is what causing the issue. In this case using hubcentric rings will aid you with this vibration issue, or you need to have the wheels redrilled with the proper bolt pattern.
If you look at the back side of the wheel it should say somehwere what the bolt pattern is. Bet you its 5x114.5 and 5x120

Yup, if they are dual pattern I'm willing to put money on they are 5x120mm. Most companies only offer 5x120mm no a days. Pretty hard to find a 5x4.75 unless its a replica corvette/4th gen f-body, drag specific rim or a $$$$ forged wheel.
Whats the make of wheel?

86 is too humble.
If they are indeed 5x120, check out his method for fixing that. Very cool.

Re: Vibration and Centering rings
Ive got adapters that are perfectly hub centric on the rear.... they are NOT hub centric on the fronts.
Thats when i realized for the fronts you are kind of at the mercy of whoever made your brake rotors as to hub diameter. Perhaps they were hub centric from the factory... but my rotors (now hubs) are nowhere near the same diameter as my rear hubs.
Food for thought.

Re: Vibration and Centering rings
Ok, I took the wheel off, and looked for numbers. I found three.
They are "Pacer" rims, and I can't find a website, number ANYTHING. It's very frustrating.
2 of the numbers turn up nothing, 1 is apparently the part number for the "center cap" itself, which isn't helpful.
Not sure how to tell what they are at this point...

Re: Vibration and Centering rings
pacer makes very few designs for these cars, id assume they are the soft 8/D knock offs. which in turn likely have the proper bolt pattern but most certainly need the hub-centric rings since they are mainly designed for trucks.
pics would help

Re: Vibration and Centering rings
Here's the best picture I have at the moment.
I really want to deal with this, because I REALLY need new tires, but I don't want to buy until I know the rims will work.
