Anyone who knows the 700R4.....

My tranny is giving me a ton of problems. Lately it is shifting 1-2 at 4000rom most of the time, and the same 4000 rpm for 2-3. It hardly ever gets into 3rd and 4th cruising. However, once today it shifted normally through 1 and 2. Today under WOT it started shifting at about the same 4000rpm if the shifter is left in (D). If I run through the gears manually, (bumping into next gear at 5000 rpms) it will upshift perfectly. I have not had a 2-3 full throttle upshift in months....It just used to freewheel. However, today, shifting manually, I can consistently get a 2-3 WOT upshift. What the hell is going on here? Can a TV cable go bad, or is my tranny dying?
Also, Is there anything that can go wrong in the valvebody to dramatically increase the line pressure? Sometimes when shifting from Neutral to drive it will hit so hard the car lurches forward. Other times it does it stock.

It will also not downshift. If you want to downshift you have to do it manually.

The tranny is an 89 and has 92K miles on it!

Please help before I rebuild!!

Tried adjusting, but I couldnt get the thing to ratchet. Can one of these things go bad?

The very wierd part is my 2-3 upshift problem. I had lost the 2-3 WOT upshift a long time ago, and now its back. Should I buy a new TV cable?

The engine is a TPI. If I remember correctly, you push in the little rectangular plastic piece and then rotate the throttle body blades and it makes a loud "ratcheting" sound. Then, you have adjusted the tv cable, right?

Check the governor. Make sure that the weights are operating properly. Also make sure that the gear doesn't have a missing tooth. It's located on the driver's side of the trans with a ball type cover on it.

You are adjusting the cable wrong.

You push in the tab on the cable and at the same time, pull the cables sheath backwards, towards the rear of the car, as far as you can. Then, release the cable tab. Now, either in the car with the throttle cable or by hand on the linkage system, rotate the throttle to WOT. It may be hard to do but the cable will then ratchet outwards all by itself and then it is (pretty much) adjusted correctly.

You may need one (or so) ratchets inward or outward to fine tune your shifting points but don't go beyond 2 ratchets with the sheath FORWARD or you will fry your trans from low line pressures. Pulling the sheat backward too far will just raise the shift points and raise the shift firmness.
