just another 305 cam & head question

I am looking to replace the cam and heads in my 87 305 auto and was wondering wether or not to just have the stock heads ported or buy s/r torqers and have them ported. the cam I am interested in using is a crane compu cam spec #'s are as follow
adv. duration 264/270 @.050 208/214. 112 deg. lobe. and gross lift is .438/.452

would this be a good setup or not and if not can you recomend something for around the same price and buying a 350 isn't what I have in mind.

If you are paying to get them ported, I'd say the Aluminum L98 "vette" heads are better than s/r torquers if you can find a used set cheap. No EGR though. I'm gonna go out a limb and say that the s/r torquers out of the box, will give similar flow #s to a home ported set of stock 1.84/1.50 valve 305 heads. I may be wrong though. Pretty soon(this month), I will be putting in the crane 2032 cam 214/220 in my 305 5 speed as well as some sort of home ported stock TPI heads and home ported base.

you'll have to let me know how it performs. but do you think that this is a good cam or that I should opt. for the bigger cam that you are going for?

Beast5spdGTA....looks like i am in the same boat as you but I am an IROC. I plan on porting the stock head, installing a cam, headers and aftermarket base/runners, port matching all the parts. I am hoping to run very low 14s,maybe high 13s.

Porting is over rated, polishing is where its at!

Let me explain. Porting increases the size of where the air has to go. Increases decrease air velocity, and decreases increas velocity. Flow numbers are representative or how much air has to turn, speed up, slow down and rub against the side walls.

In a perfect world, air would run down a equal sized tube, right into the cylinder. But it has to bob and weave throughout.

Polishing, and a 3 angle valve job on and L98 or TPI 350 head will serve you best. Maybe some mild grinder work, but leave it to the engineers and machine shops!

Am I right?

It's hard to beat World S/R Torquer 305 heads for a 305. They bolt on, have screw-in studs, will easily accomodate higher lifts with springs, etc. That said, even World recommends bowl work on them. One look down the throat will tell you why: You want the throat to be about 85% the diameter of the valve - as-delivered, they're about 75%. Cutting down/smoothing the guide intrusion into the port is another good restriction reduction idea. I would agree with the "out of the box, will flow similar to home ported stock 1.84/1.50 heads" statement for that reason, but a little porting work on the Worlds (vs. a lot of porting work on the stock heads) will put them over the top. And, stock heads have press-in studs.

The aluminum heads have 58cc chambers, but that's intended for a 350 (aluminum needs higher compression to make the same power as cast iron). So, even though you'll retain your original static compression, your gain will not be as good.

If you go with any bigger cam, be prepared to up your stall speed.
