Installed a Dual Gate Hurst Shifter Today

Just installed a dual gate hurst in my brothers 87 Z28. The shifter itself is nice....good sturdy design. The instructions were very poor. The pictures were horrible....way to dark and not very clear. Here is a picture of it installed:

Not sure why they didnt just make it bolt in....using the factory cable, because you had to use the cable that is supplied with the kit. One thing that was cool is that it allowed you to use your steering lock cable...unlike the Mega Shifter. Overall, the dual gate is nice and sturdy, but over priced.

It did originally. You could probably still use a stock cable with it.

yeah, I've heard that the original design was different and it aloud you to use your factory cable. Without having to cut, grind, and re-weld the brackets..it's impossible to use the facotry cable on the new model.

The left side is for normal driving. The other one is for racing so you don't shift past your intended gear.

why dont they just make the whole shifter like the right side? im confused...so you always get the right gear on the right side, but it slips around on the left side? lol.

In the good old days when political correctness didn't own all, it was called the "his & hers" shifter. The left side functioned just like a stock shifter so that there would be no confusion during normal driving, but the right side functioned like a ratchet shifter for racing situations.

I had a megashifter in my IROC, and in addition to hating everything about that cheap poorly built lousy fitting POS, I found that it was a bit combersome to work the lock every time I wanted to shift normally. If I ever wind up back with an automatic equipped vehicle, I'll definately take a Hurst dual gate over a Megashifter even at double the price.

nevermind, i guess im not asking the question right. i just dont know why there needs to be 2 sides. i just think they should make it shifting manually for racing, but put it in drive to go around.

I think I just explained why. The method you described is how the B&M Megashifter works, and 95% of women and non-gearheads can't figure out how to work it, plus it's a pain in the ***. The hurst eliminates that.

I am definatly getting one of these my only concern is launching in the race gate. With my stock shifter/ left side of the dual gate you can rev up a little in neutral and launch into drive. The problem I see with the race gate is that to go from neutral to 1st you have to go all the way down through 4th, 3rd, 2nd, then into 1st. Does that cause any problem or work just the same? Please give it a test for me if your willing because I've been curious about that for a long time...

you shouldnt rev it in neutral and drop it anyways. does the hurst shifter ratchet in the right side. im just saying you can have a shifter with no ratcheting that doesnt skip gears...

No it doesn't really ratchet. There's a stop in each gear that you can hit if you push the shifter to the left and forward at the same time.

I had one in my factor 71 442 with a 455 option, I loved that shifter and was so glad when they came out for our cars. Plus it was so cool to push that little spring loaded lever over to open up the gate side when you used it. The unit worked great. I cant wait to get one for my car.

I swear that nobody understands that the point of this shifter is to provide the ability for it to function 100% the same as stock as well as to provide a rachet-type shifter for racing. No other shifter gives you that dual functionality.

When you're racing, the style that you just drew above would be a pain in the ***. It's a lot easier to just bump the shifter forward rather than worry about horizontal notching. A ratchet shifter makes racing a LOT easier, but like I said above a couple times, it's not ideal in cases where you want a 100% stock style movement the rest of the time. This is what makes the dual gate popular. You get the best of both. If you want a shifter that just does the ratcheting, there are a hundred out there to choose from already, including a bunch from Hurst. This shifter simply offers a different approach that many people prefer.

I have the Dual Gate also and at first I hated it cuz I would always overshift. After a few weeks, I got used to it tho. It requires a slightly more delicate touch as the "foward lockout" is a lot different than ratchet style. I liked the ratchet style of the B&M (which i had before the dual gate) cuz it was impossible to overshift and when you really wanna haul, nothing beats just slammin the shifter foward. But as mentioned in other posts, I hated pulling up on the lever and it just became a pain to manuever. Also, I think the dual gate looks 100 times better than the megashifter. However, a couple things I don't like about the dual gate is how reverse is positioned (its just kinda there, no indent) and the plastic ball threads onto the metal stick. There is no metal thread insert in the ball so after a while, the threads are shot and I can only get it snug.

That's interesting too, my first-rev dual-gate has a threaded insert. It's a standard thread in any case, so you could replace the shift **** easily enough.

yea, youll rip your input shaft if you keep doing that. get a higer stall converter and powerbrake it. and if you wanna get serious, get a transbrake , but if youve been launching from neutral i doubt your ready for a transbrake.

Do they make a dual gate for Firebirds ? They only list Camaro on their website.

Yes, The one for the camaro will fit a firebird.
I have one in my firebird. I did have to put a 3/4 inch shim in to fit properly, because the firebird counsel is taller than the camaro, But no big deal.

Incorrect, the Dual Gate shifter will only fit the 82-84 Firebirds with the Camaro type console, the 85-92 firebirds have a totally different console, and without modification, will not fit. I know this because I bought the thing, and bought a console (if I deside to go auto).

O.k maybe you got it to fit but it doesn't look the greatest because you had to mount the trim plate on top of the console. Unlike the camaro where it looks clean because the trim is made for that console.

I absolutely love the Dual gate shifter my friend had it in his car and it was so fun. Now I'm saving to buy one for my 84 T/A. They make a kit for the 83-85 camaros would that fit my car right and stuff?

Dual Gate Firebird

I have a 1987 firebird with a Dual Gate. It can be done. It takes a little console mod. It does not look as good as in a Camero, but it is a hugh improvement over the stock shifter.

Dual Gate TA

It will not look as good as the 1991 Black Camero "The Sickness." I have my interior removed. I just finished welding a roll bar in Friday. I will try to get the console back together in the next few days and post some pictures. It is not the most beautiful thing in the world, but it is a HUGH improvement over the stock. Just so anybody that is interested will know Next Generation-Year One stocks them.

put it in first in the ratchet gate...foot on brake.....run it up to about 2000rpm and hold it..light turns green, go like hell, shift appropriately.

Obviously you never owned a dual gate. If you do, you'll want a megashifter sooner rather than late. I know, I've had both and that's why I now have the Megashifter.

If I'm not mistaken. it also has the NHRA required reverse lock out if your in the gate mode. Kind of like two shifters in one.

Nice. I've had one (old version...use the stock cable) on the shelf for years, but I haven't gotten around to installing it yet. I'm looking for a decent, used shift plate to cut up (per the instructions) but the few I've gotten off of fleabay have have the narliest cigarette burns on it.

I'll probably just bite the bullet and get a new one.

I don't remember paying too much for it either. IIRC, $135 shipped off of fleabay.

Re: Installed a Dual Gate Hurst Shifter Today

Old post brought new. I have the same shifter, but when I work over to the slap shift side or "racing" side, i have problems....

1. if in 1st and rev to high, it wont shift when i slap, i have to let off before it grabs... ?? Why?
2. if in 1st and i shift to soon, it bogs way down...?? Why?
3. when in 1st and actually do get to 2nd, it usually skips 2nd and goes to 3rd...?? Why?

if anyone has any ideas on how to adjust this setup or change something let me know... pictures of how to do this would be very very very much appreciated!!

Thanks in Advance!
Chris
