is the MSD billet HEI distributor THAT MUCH better than stock???

is it only worth it to get the MSD one if i absolutely have to replace my distributor? in other words, is it worth ripping out a perfectly good stock GM unit to replace it with a 300 dollar MSD one?

I'd say no. I looked at the $300 MSD for my new 350, but I asked myself the same question. A distributor really only works one way. Not much room for improvement or modification. I seriously doubt that an expensive billet shaft is going to make any difference in spark power or even horsepower.

I went with a brand new stock GM small cap distributor for only $140. Done!

Yea it will get more spark after Redline, but if your best power comes before redline then why buy a piece of equipment that never sees any use that it was built for. Kinda like buying a Ford Excursion, and driving it in the suburbs all the time

The Summit complete HEI with coil/cap/rotor for about $150 is pretty good setup for most people. I usually buy the GM complete HEI (about $225 from SDPC???) and they have worked out well, too. The GM module seems to rev a little better and give better dwell characteristics than aftermarket replacement HEI ignition modules (not the HO modules like MSD/Accell/etc... They are ok but not worth the money over the GM module IMO)
