Banks cat back

Hey all,
Thinking of the Banks cat back system, has anyone had any experience with this? They claim something like 30 percent more rear wheel power. Kind of hard to belive.

I've had a Banks cat back system on my 89 IROC L98 for over three years. It's works real good for me and also has an Awesome sound ! You should look into also getting their Y pipe that will go from your stock manifolds to the cat. Now that really helps. The stock Y pipes are a joke ! The only thing is both tailpipes will be on the left side like a SLP setup. Some guys don't like it. I have no problem with it for the performance I get out of it.

I've had one on my car since '87! I love it! It fits perfectly and sounds better than anything I've heard since. It's holding up great. I suspect it will last as long as the car does.

Problem is, they don't make 'em any more. On "the boards", no one ever mentioned their system (it's always Hooker, Flowmaster, Dynomax, etc.), and I wondered why. So, out of curiosity, I called 'em a couple of weeks ago to ask. They told me they sold all of their F body stuff "years ago". They're primarily into trucks and RV's nowadays. Go figure.

I had a Banks Power Pack system. The performance and sound was great, but not 30 percent power increase like they used to advertise. The only thing I didn't like was the muffler used glass for sound dampening. After a while (years) it got too loud. I now use a Mufflex 3 1/2" with a SpinTech muffler.

Thanks for the advice guys. I ordered the Stinger (cat back only) from TPIS yesterday. They are closing them out for $250.00 plus shipping. I asked them about the Y pipe and they don't have them. I have the Edelbrock TES headers but am waiting to Jet Hot them before I install, so that should help with the Y pipe.

By the way did anyone have any milage gains?

I had the Banks exhaust on my Camaro for 10 years now, but it rusted through and replaced it with a Mufflex 3-1/2" exhaust. I also have one on my daily driver IROC, sounds good.

I have to say that Bank's claim is for the LG4 motored cars, where it gives and honest 35-45hp gain when using a 3" cat. TPI guys will be lucky to get 20hp. I'm refering to the y-pipe and cat-back here.

I'm curious as to why they (Gale Banks) told you they sold ALL of their F-Body stuff years ago...I had a partial system which was missing the 3" intermediate pipe piece that went from the cat to the axle pipe. So I called them about 3 or 4 months ago and they sent me the replacement piece for 60 dollars. It DID seem that they had to really search for it, but they found it . I haven't gotten around to installing it yet, since I'm waiting to get a 3" cat. But the thing looks killer, especially the muffler. You can hold it up and look straight through it with NO restrictions anywhere!

As I recall, Banks' Y-pipe was responsible for most of the gains of their system. I wouldn't recommend buying a "cat-back" system that didn't include a good Y-pipe. Their just isn't much to be gained without it. Now, if you're running headers that include a Y-pipe, that's a different story. In that case, cat-back only would be just what you want.
