Re: Where can I buy POR-15?

the best way to get it is to call auto body supply store in your area, if you buy it off of the web you have to pay shipping, and i want to say that pro-15 website charges a ridiculus amount to ship it, i want to say it was like 20 bucks shipping for a gallon. i get it from a local body supply store and they only charge me what it goes for on the website + taxes so thats the route i would go.

Which supply store. I am in Chicago and would go to that store. I just ordered the small pint kit for $20 + shipping but would like to pick up the gallon and avoid shippin cost. As long as gas to et it is not more than shipping.

how much do you think I would need to do the floor pan, wheel wells, and engine bay? Does anyone have any pictures of an engine bay painted with it? Does it look ok or do you recommend painting over top of it?

Re: Where can I buy POR-15?

My 2 cents when working with POR..Be VERY mindful of the instruction that says were gloves and protective clothing unless you like the appearance of dark nails and mole like blotches on your skin. Time, a blowtorch or laser removal is needed to get this stuff off. Also will bubble slightly in high humid conditions so wait for a dryer day

I would say about one quart for starters. Unless you have a empty engine bal it is going to hard reaching everything.

Re: Where can I buy POR-15?

my car is a full resto project at the time so i am por-15 every thing, i talked with some body guys and they said that a gallon should allow me to cover all of the underhood, floor pans and wheel wells, i am also going to por 15 my roll cage and inside of the car, i guess i figure now that i have the car 100% stripped now would be the time to do it, i will post pictures of the under hood in a little bit, its not finished yet, still have to remove the master cylinder to get that part, i also want to mention that the black por 15 is glossy so i looks really good.

Buds auto body supply store in summit, i live in oak lawn so its like a 20 minute drive for me. out the door after taxes it was 151 something for a gallon. make sure you call ahead and make sure they have it, i called and they had it the next day for me to pick up

just on a side note buying three quarts of por 15 is more expensive than a gallon and two if you buy a gallon, and it dries up the trick is to put a screw through the top and side, that way when you want to use it, you pull the top screw to let air in, and the side screw to let it come out. it works try it

Re: Where can I buy POR-15?

I'm thinking about buying this for my 85 berly to do the inside/outside of my flloorpan. Is it really easier to use a brush rather then spray? Also would I need to prep it just like if I were painting it?

P.S. Has anyone ever seen a motor mount break and cause the driveshaft to put a tear in the trans tunnel?

Re: Where can I buy POR-15?

I haven't checked any parts stores yet. Theres only a couple of car quest around here and none of em are very close to me. I'll prolly just get it from my buddy that owns a body shop since he'll be fixing my tranny tunnel. YAY! LOL

You need to degrease the area is if painting, and use some thing to ruff the area up to give it some thing to bite into if painting over paint.

As to the second question I have torn up a trans tunnel with a broken trans mount. engine mount doesnt help, but wont give you enough bounce factor to hit the tunnel unless the trans mount is broken as well.

Re: Where can I buy POR-15?

Oh forgot to mention, brush all the way. POR 15 is a PITA to get to spray right and the clean up is a bitch. Experienced that misery once would not try it again.

If you do spray it, use a cheap throw away gun. If the tip drys when spraying POR-15 is very hard to get out of the gun.

also it has no UV protection so if sun light hits it the POR will peel and turn gray.

Re: Where can I buy POR-15?

Thanks for all the input guys! I'm gonna just brush it sounds like less of a hassle. As for the trans mount I don't know honestly. I bought the car with engine/tranny gone but the passenger side engine mount is gone. I can literally wiggle it around and probably pull it out if I wanted to.

Re: Where can I buy POR-15?

As long as you go smooth and put enough on, it will self level really really nice for you. I used to use throw away cheapie brushes, but now I get slightly better ones. Main reason being that Por-15 is a sticky sticky coating, and the super cheap brushes lose strands and trying to pick those out after youre done brushing is not fun.

Get a decent brush...just a little better than the little $0.25 ones, take your time, cover anything you dont want it on, and go to town. Try not to go over the same spot too many times and it'll look great when it dries. Dont fret too much over how it looks right after brushing. Give it some time.

The parts that Ive done with it, even years ago, still look pretty close to powder coat, and they're TOUGH.

J.
