Re: anyone try royal purple ice radiator colant additive

I am using Purple Ice in my T/A. I believe that it does run a little cooler with the product then without. I had a overheating problem when in stop and go traffic, and pulling long mountain grades. The air dam is intact. I replaced the radiator with a new 3 flu brass unit. Converted the original single electric fan to a dual factory fan set-up. Added a aftermarket fan switch that acitvates both fans at 195 degrees. The car would still overheat in traffic and on mountain grades. I installed the Royal Purple as directed, and the overheating problem in stop and go traffic went away, so based on this observation I think the product is effective. The overheating problem on mountain grades continued, until I installed a control on the transmission wiring to prevent the torque converter from locking up unless the the transmission is in the OD position. Now the car maintains 195 degrees all of the time, even extended idling with the A/C on. I usually don't like additives, but there was a noticable improvement in the cooling with this product.

I have used that product for a year now and it lowers the engine temp about 5deg on average for me for both city/hyw. So it works to a certain extent with a good working working cooling system. It will not correct a failing cooling system.

Re: anyone try royal purple ice radiator colant additive

I've been using Water Wetter for years, its a similar product from Red Line Oils. I can say this stuff dropped my coolant temperature as much as 20 degrees F. Go to the Red Line Oil site, they've got a good explanation on there about how this stuff works.

Re: anyone try royal purple ice radiator colant additive

Yes NAPA sells most Royal Purple products. I use the Purple Ice in my Bronco with excellant results. My IROC had an auxillary fan put in by the previous owner. Its been averaging about 102 here in Southwest Texas. Car has not gone over 200. My Vette with the similar L98 has a Hypertech chip and thermostat also does not break 200.

My buddy owns an 89 Mustang GT and uses Redline Water Wetter (I use RP Ice), and he used to have bad heat soak, problems went away and he says about a 15-20* drop as well in temp.

I have not yet tried my RP Ice but will be using it in a full water coolant system to try it out.

Tell your buddie with the GT to run a stock fan shroud, stock 9 blade fan, and the DSO police issue clutch fan. Electric fans are horrible in those cars.My 92 shot up to 220 with the Vortech.I ripped everything out and went back to stock cooling with that fan clutch the police cars had.Now it runs at 190. I set 3 other fox's up that way in town with heat issues, one was an SCCA car. They all run at 190

If he has any questions tell him to call me in the office, and I'd be glad to point him in a direction. I'm a 79-93 fox-body specialist.

Sorry didn't mean to hijack.

Any parts store should have a great additive for you. How old is the radiator? Did the heat issue just start to happen?
