Anyone runnung an aluminum flywheel?

Im in the market for a flywheel and was curious how people liked there alum. flywheel. Im doing a stock LT1 swap, and feel like i just need alittle bit of a boost, but some people just flat out DONT like them.

Let me know what you think of yours.

with the XFI cam and billet flywheel from the PO it reved pretty quick
but the idiot never torqued down the head bolts... hand tight ONLY

Re: Anyone runnung an aluminum flywheel?

yeah i heard they rev quicker, but is it just in neutral, or does it climb through the gears quicker too?

Re: Anyone runnung an aluminum flywheel?

Less rotating weight. They will spin up faster and spin down faster. They can also cause idle issues with big cams. Not enough rotational mass to actually "damp" the uneven firing engine. Every "lope" is a misfire of sorts, and without enough weight inertia pushing it forward it can start to run REAL rough.

I've heard lots of people recommend to stay away from them unless it's a hardcore race car.

They do rev much quicker, but like InfernalVortex mentioned you will feel the motor more. But I intend to autox so I live with it.

Re: Anyone runnung an aluminum flywheel?

I ran an alum fly wheel and as long as you dont have a cam with a lot of overlap, you wont have an idle issues. and it does spin up a lot faster.

Not for the street IMHO. I use one in my road race car and just driving around the paddock is not nice.

I drove my car in the street everyday with no issues at all.

Re: Anyone runnung an aluminum flywheel?

At the end of the day it depends on the total weight of the flywheel and clutch irrespective if the material. For example I am using the McLeod Magnum force clutch and flywheel which is very light but I was recently offered a Hays alloy flywheel that weighed 15lbs same as a stock GM lightweight cast flywheel add a clutch to either and they would be streetable as I have just fitted this set up on my 2nd gen car after the Tilton packed up, with that I use a flexi plate.

Re: Anyone runnung an aluminum flywheel?

I have a Fidanza 11" alum flywheel on my car. Engine has plenty of lope 252* @.050 on 108lsa. Drives perfectly fine at slow speed, though I'm sure the low rear gears and tranny 1st gear help a lot. Still learning to drive a stick shift so I can't compare it to a steel flywheel as I've never driven a car with one. I don't have much seat time maybe 15minutes total, but no issues driving it so far.

Re: Anyone runnung an aluminum flywheel?

Yes I should mention I have the seriously close ratio Muncie box so 1st is way too long.
