KYB Gas-a-Just vs. KYB GR2
I've done a few searches and can't find an answer to my question. Of the two cheaper options of KYB shocks, which one is better? The GR2 shocks or the Gas-a-Just shocks?
I have Koni Yellows on my GTA, but I really don't need or want that stiff of a shock on my T/A convertible. I just want something that is a nice smooth ride. It still has stock springs on it.

The gas adjust is the higher quality, stiffer shock of the two as far as I know.
How much better? I don't have a clue.
What I do know is that I remember emailing KYB for some information on the rates a long time ago and the gas adjust was like 20lbs stiffer at the same rate.

Then why do the GR2's cost more?

Re: KYB Gas-a-Just vs. KYB GR2
The GR2's are cheaper. For the rear's, $39 for the G-A-J, $23 for the GR2.
Buy a set of Koni's or Bilstein's if you want handling.
If you just want a cheap OEM level shock buy whichever of the KYB's suit your wallet with the G-A-J being the better choice. Both are stiff as hell BTW and ride worse than the Koni's will

I hear ya. The shocks that came on the T/A when I bought it a few months ago are toast. I just need something on a budget for now.

Re: KYB Gas-a-Just vs. KYB GR2
I have the AGX (adjustable) on my 87 Formula... Honestly they ride harder than I really would prefer. I was hoping o be able to adjust from Soft to Hard, but I ended up with firm to too hard...
One thing I will say is I can adjust the performance, so if I had a problem with the rear end wanting to come around, or the car wanting to push, I could adjust a little on them... But they are a bit uncomfortable for me personally... When I bought them way back when, the salesman at summit told me the KYB were softer than the other ones I was looking at tho...
John
I remember Bruce Hawkins telling me that he liked the ride of the standard KYB shocks, not too hard, not too soft tho.

Re: KYB Gas-a-Just vs. KYB GR2
I have the KYB "Gas A Just" on mine and its exactly what I was looking for. A nice firm shock. Its most likely not for you.
You will probably like the GR-2 because its KYB's "stock" replacement shock.
Its a Twin tube design where the "Gas A Just" is a Monotube.
Heres a link explaining the difference at KYB's website.

By the way, I think KYB makes a exhalent product.

Re: KYB Gas-a-Just vs. KYB GR2
Personally, I have the GR2 struts and GAJ shocks on my car.
The ride is "stiff" to say the least, and not exactly compliant. KYB doesn't make a GAJ strut for the front.
I'm not sure this was a wise decision, but i made it over 10 years ago now.
The GAJ shocks in rear are stiffer than the fronts, so it can make the rear end feel skittish at times.

Re: KYB Gas-a-Just vs. KYB GR2
Decades ago I put KYB Gas-A-Justs on my friends 1973 Corvette. In the last 6 years or so, I put them on the rear of my 1988 Lincoln Mark VII LSC.
Friend and I both removed them because they were shaking our cars to death. KYB provided me a warranty replacement to GR2's, due to my dissatisfaction . GR2's are OK.

Re: KYB Gas-a-Just vs. KYB GR2
As previously stated, the GR2 (now known as the Excel-G) is a twin-tube (shock or strut) and the Gas-a-Just is a monotube (shock only). The monotube is a bit stiffer than the twin-tube. That's the difference.
As little weight as our cars carry in the back end, I would think that the GR2/Excel-G is good enough to get the job done for a DD type vehicle. I bought GR2's for all 4 corners on my previous Firebird but never got to drive with them, unfortunately. I now have Konis all the way around on my GTA with the rears set at full soft and they're perfect.

Re: KYB Gas-a-Just vs. KYB GR2
I'm a fan of the Bilstein HD's. Handling is excellent. They ride decent on quality pavement but are harsh on had pavement. If I were doing shocks & struts again, I would contact Strano Performance and get his custom Bilsteins & springs.
Best riding shocks & struts I've had on a 3rd Gen are Monroe. They are cheap but ride decent. My convertible has Monroe. They aren't for a performance set up. They are lacking for hard driving and aggressive cornering.
KYB's are a good compromise overall. Had them before.
