Looking at OER,Dorman and Spectra replacement fuel tanks for my 85 build. Any thoughts, install issues, quality, etc?

Re: Fuel Tanks
I need to change mine out too, but I'm going to find a used one, if you look on the boards all the aftermarket ones have allot of fitment issues especially with the filler neck and none are the correct capacity (15.5-16 gallons, depending on options and year)

Re: Fuel Tanks
I see your in Katy, there was some one selling an OEM tank from an 88 on Craigslist back in December. All the reman tanks seemed to be plagued with fitment issues but I've found a few places local to Houston that can repair original fuel tanks. I am doing a new fuel pump in mine, but I plan to reuse the factory tank, should it not be in the best condition I'll have it repaired because I know it fits.
Edit: I did speak to Polydyn a while back and they said for factory tanks they send people to Don Harts out in Waller.

Re: Fuel Tanks
Never tried their fuel tanks, but just about everything I have ever bought that had Dorman or Spectre on the package was absolute junk. I now avoid both brands like the plague. Not been very impressed with OER brand either.

Re: Fuel Tanks
i have used all three of these and in general based on their stamping marks they all appear to be made by the same manufacturer. You can get different coatings appears to be the main difference.
The biggest issue as others have stated is the fuel neck is generally not properly located. in my experience generally too low contacting the plastic fill neck shield and also on the short side, works but not very far away from the edge opening of the plastic shield.
As far as fitting other than the neck, i have generally needed to further bend over the seam weld area at the back of the tank, but this wasn't too bad and other than that they have all fit fine.
In use the major issue i have seen is some have poor venting for fuel fill that causes the need to slowly fill the tank... this seems to be hit / miss and can be somewhat mitigated by holding the fuel pump handle at 90 to 180 degrees. this is due i believe to inconsistent positioning and poor reproduction of the vent that is inside the fuel neck (i have taken an original and aftermarket tank neck apart and have seen this difference).. a potential solution is to vent the tank in another way which there are a couple of potentials but involve a modification to either the tank or using one of the lines coming out of the pump unit tubing
Original tanks clearly work well, however a lot have cracks at neck tank joint (can be re soldered), but more common is light rusting on inside even on good appearing tank due to ethanol blended fuel. On my 88 trans am that has under 30K good weather only miles that i needed to change fuel pump on, had every intention of re-using but even though tank had as new exterior appearance, rust line inside tank on top third
Good luck

Re: Fuel Tanks
If you can't source an OEM tank (possibly an NOS piece), consider having your original tank cleaned out/repaired. Aftermarket tanks generally have a bad rep for fitment; in particular, I'd avoid anything from Dorman like the plague.

Re: Fuel Tanks
Thanks for all the replies. Got to look at various tanks at a part's house and like you guys said, they are junk.Looking now for a OEM but only finding used rusty ones. Was suggested to get a original tank and have it metalized by a plating shop inside and out. The search continues...

Re: Fuel Tanks
Installed a Spectra 2721B? last week. Didn't come with the gas cap, but after contacting Spectra they over-nighted one to me. (Does not use a third gen factory one) This tank is baffled and has the plastic pick-up baffle in it.
Had a few fitment issues. I had to hammer the seam edges over with a hammer so the tank would fit. The neck was perfectly placed. This tank vented horribly, but after cleaning my vent valve, seems to be better. I still get the strong smell of fuel occasionally, but it is not pouring out the neck like my old tank, and there are no other issues. When the weather warms up more I can drive it .

This was the second tank I installed, the used one I first bought had a pin hole in it.

Re: Fuel Tanks
The Spectra Premium tank uses a Stant 10817 gas cap or equivalent.

Re: Fuel Tanks
I'm weird and like the factory baffle and ease of install. Just drops right in.
