Hurst Dual Gate Shifter

i dont understand this shifter at all. can someone explain it to me!? i know it sounds stupid

what are the 1-4 #'s on the side, it looks like a manual shifter! thats awesome, but to a newbie like me, its confusing! should i get the B&M megashifter instead of this?

The shifter has a "street" gate with the normal PRNOD2L pattern, and a "race" gate with the "4321" pattern. When the car is in neutral you can move the lever between the gates. The race gate has spring loaded stops so that by pushing forward and slightly to the right to upshift, you only shift one gear at a time, almost like a ratcheting shifter.

The best thing about it is that it installs easily in about half an hour. It bolts in directly in place of the stock shifter, even reuses the factory park/neutral and reverse light switch.

The only complaints I have are that they got the sizes of some of the holes that you're supposed to reuse some of the factory screws in wrong, a couple were just slightly too large. I also wish there was maybe some kind of boot or something to cover the slot for the street gate. There is a sliding door that covers the race gate though.

FiReBReTHa,

Are you talking about a GP on the DualGate or on the Megashifter? I am really interested in the DualGate and would get in on it. I don't like the Megashifter all that much - however, if the price were right, I may consider it.

If you get something going on the DualGate, I am definitely in.

I'll have to think about it before I commit on the Megashifter, as I am not too sure I want it.

the basis of the two gates is so that you dont shift into neutral while racing cause that can blow your engine. i think some people may get confused with the ratchiting shifter(like me )oh btw if you do a GP on the hurst im in

dont get the dual gate it sucks. it is great for a while but the construction is ****ty. i had the hurst and first the rivets that hold the shift handle to the ratcheter broke off. ok so i fixed that then the metal on the ratchet broke. if you do get it , baby it it cant hadle hard shifting. the megashifter is what i have now and i think it looks better is cheaper and can take a good beating because it is a no nonsense design

Shift handle to the ratcheter? Are you sure you're talking about the same shifter? The dual-gate isn't really a ratcheting type. I got the Hurst because I wasn't impressed with the construction of the B&M. (Or anything else about B&M for that matter.)

That's interesting, 87z. I have heard what a headache the Megashifter is and I really don't like its look much. But I have not heard any of your criticisms of the DualGate before. And I have to agree with Apeiron, the DualGate is not a ratcheting shifter, are you perhaps refering to the V-matic?

How hard are you hitting the thing? You talk about it taking a good beating... Knocking the handle off, breaking the metal ?!? I really have no intention of abusing a shifter - just using it the way it is meant to be used. Has anyone else ever experienced problems with poor construction of the Hurst? 'Cause I have never heard this before.

i dont really care for my B&M. my cable broke. they send you 5' when all you need is 3' and then it sticks and reverse is the biggest B*TCH ever. and then it just sucks installing. reverse lights and neutral safety dont work on my car.it sucks. i want a stick so bad so i dont have to deal with that SH*T anymore

There was a topic here not too long ago discussing the Megashifter. Alot of comments were made that were very similar to what RARE-ROC-Z said.

speaking of Hurst and B&M. Does anyone know where I can get a good used Quarterstick from? I have had the Quarterstick in my '73 but when I canged to a 700R-4 I had to go w/ a B&M. Both are good, I just like the Hurst better. As far as the Dual Gate I am not sold on it!! Looks to d*** cheap.

I've never had a single problem with my Megashifter. Everything works fine, it looks great, it takes a beating.

And don't take it personally or get overly offended if I suggest you're having problems because of a sloppy install.
To me, it was a piece of cake; but then, I have all the tools, and I was not rushed to install it.

We have a term at the shop: "Ford'ing", that's where you get excited near the end of a project and start slapping things together to get done, and end up with a pile of crap, instead of taking your time.

The only thing I don't like about the B&M shifter is that it doesn't use the key lock like the stock shifter. There's probably a simple way to fabricate a method to utilize the lock cable, but it wasn't a priority.
