MINIRAM WATER NECK ISSUES

A lot of folks have had issues with their miniram in regards to the water neck.
Let me shed some light.

First of off, there are 2 different water necks available for the miniram. The original 'y-body' version (since the miniram was designed for corvettes), and the modified 'f-body' version. The f-body version is cut, rotated and welded so it points up and clears the serpentine setup.

Now, there is a second issue with miniram's regarding the thermostat. On older minirams, the thermostat was placed on the intake in the machined recess much like any other intake. However, when 'shallow' thermostats became hard to find, TPIS decided to instead machine the recess in the waterneck. What happens on an older style, if you use a normal thermostat is when it tries to open it bottoms out on the intake, and reduces coolant flow greatly. You can do one of two things on an older miniram. 1) get a new water neck with the machined recess, 2) drill some holes in the thermostat.

Attached is some pix of the 2 different waternecks, so you can compare it to yours. TPIS was infamous for shipping the wrong water necks, and when you buy a used miniram you might not get the correct waterneck you need.

Re: MINIRAM WATER NECK ISSUES

The thermostat was still hitting the bottom of the miniram. I wasn't happy with how hot the car would get (205f), so I drilled 4 small holes in the thermostat.
