White letters on tires or not?
Just got new tires, [Yokohama Avid S/T], they've got white lettering on one side, and all black on the other side. My car is all black, with black ground effects. Should i mount the tires with the white letters facing out or not?
My friends are telling me not to, but I kind of want the white letters facing out since I think of it as more of a "musclecar" look.
Just a fashion question i suppose.

my friend my friend my friend.....I had/have the same problem. I have a black 89 Camaro and I had Whites on one side and black on the other. I had the letters out for awhile and it looked really good for some reason to me. But then I got bored with the way it looked and I wanted to go all back so I flipped them around. It still looks good, real good. The only problem I see with the all black is if you have 15s like me when your tires need some blackmajic they look really big (60 series look huuuuge) but when they are nice n clean they look bad ***. Click on my link and go to car shots that is my car with the letters out. You can compare my car to UNFORGIVEN89's camaro, his is the same year and same everything as mine but he has the black out. Take in mind his tires dont got armor all or anything on them so just take with a grain of salt. But in all honesty, I think it looks bad a$$ either way. www.rit.edu/~cjp8408 that is mine http://www.mikekey.net/fbody/pics.php That is unforgiven

Your car looks terrific with the white letters out. I think the white color of the wheels really sets it off though.
Another fashion do/dont:
Do you think that gold wheels [stock color] would look as decent or worse?
Perhaps a link would help out too right here

White letter tires came stock on some Camaro sport coupes, and they looked ok on them, but I'd say no to any other Camaro model, and definately no to any Firebird model.

I'm going to agree with the above post about 15" rims. The sidewalls are tall as anything on the 15" rims. I think it does a good job of breaking it up. I'd vote against them on a car with 16" or larger rims.

From 82-84 Firebirds it was a special option on the 15" rims to have the White lettering. I would say if you car had it originally then put them on but other wise don't. I didn't.

Personal preference again guys. I have a Black 3rd gen with RWL and it looks good. In fact these cars would look good either way. Now on Firebirds I don't know. Have to see one to be sure.

Definately not just a matter of preference, but a matter of the car as well. From 1982 to 1992 there is a good variety of "looks" that you can get out of these cars, it depends on color(s) of the car as well as size of the wheels. On mine, it looks WAY better with them IMO, can't wait to have them on all 4 corners after snow is no longer a concern. (SnoTires on the back right now, brand new BFG T/As on the front, stock 15x7 wheels)

I think white letter tires look good on any car. I'm not sure why but I just think it does. My friends parents put some on there Chevy Astro van and it made it look better. I think part of the reason you don't see more is because they, for some reason, cost more than just black sidewall tires. Anyways, I recommend some nice raised white letter tires.

If you're going for a retro (80s) look, go with the letters, otherwise (i.e. if you want your car to look good) go without. Also, most white letter tires have relatively tall side walls which looks like ***...

My opinion is that on '82 to '84 camaros, white letters are fine, but '85s and newer looks better without the RWL. I also agree that most Firebirds look better without RWL tires. I guess since there were no 16" wheels from '82-'84, I partially agree with Jim that RWL look okay on 15" wheels, but not 16" wheels. I still think that with the 85-92 fascia, RWL tires look kinda red no matter what wheel size you have.

rscamaroman,
You should get the shop that balances your wheels to mount all of the weights on the inside so you cant see your weights. Its a small thing to do, but looks tons better. Just a suggestion

cobrakiller1989,
You're not the first to notice that. When I got the tires mounted I forgot to tell them that, and when I picked the car up they already had all four done on the outside. I'll remember that on my next set!

I had never heard of mounting weights on both sides before, but I just checked mine and both sides are weighted. I guess it pays to have a good tire guy. If it does increase performance then I'll take that over the look (or lack of look) of wheel weights!

No thanks, I think I'll keep my rims. They aren't that bad either. I'd rather have the car handle well and have a small weight on the outside than have it handle bad just to look "cool". But if I were to polish my rims, I'd probably put em only on the inside anyway.

I like your yellow letter Goodyears, think I may do that to my car when i need new tires. As far as weights go I've been told by the goodyear guys that they should be balanced top to bottom and side to side also.

When I had my 85 bird I ha d the whites out, it looked good to me because the car was white. Now on my 89, no way. The car is red. To me it just would'nt look good. But its all up to you. What do you think looks best?
