Matching finish on distributor cover

I ordered a new aluminum distributor cover to replace a painted plastic one on my car, but the finish on the new one doesn't match the finish on the plenum. The texture is rougher and it's brighter, so is it possible to get a decent match without painting it? If I try to sand it, will it polish it as well and make it stand out more?

The plenum probably has oxidation. Polish both of them to achieve a consistent finish.

Ironic that the plastic F-body cover really doesn't match the plenum, and neither does a new Corvette aluminum cover. Soak it in hard water and leave it outside. Repeat the rinse and air dry in the sun daily for about a week or two, it'll match pretty closely. The super shiny fresh cast look will turn dull soon enough naturally.

Or pick up some wheel cleaner for rough cast aluminum wheels. Clean both the plenum and the extension with the acid following the directions, they should end up close to the same tone of gray.

Powder Coating is the way to go.
