Heres how I did mine....

First I created a template in the ash tray out of cardboard:

Heres a rough fitment.....in case youre wondernig...I used my old console, and cut out a square where the old switches used to be....they just happend to be close enough to fit inside the ash tray compartment (barely)

Final fitment, after cleaning up the plastic a bit...but without the ashtray door on it

The underside...lots of JBWeld so I wouldnt have to worry about it breaking off whenever I pressed down on the switches

I can take some better pics soon...but my brother has my camera right now. I really like this setup because I can just close the ash tray door and you wont beable to see the switches. Also, I mounted my power hatch release inside the console compartment.

I'm doing something quite similar. If you're only doing windows and not power mirrors you're in luck for available space I cut out most of the old ashtray supports except for the small lip that goes aroung the rear and 1/2 the sides of the opening. I cut a piece of ABS roughly to the shape, then spent some time sanding it down to fit perfect. The switches fit just fine into the ABS, and I'll be able to pop them out if I need to service or change them. Not knocking what mult68 posted at all, but it looks like they won't be coming out of that jb anytime soon I would suggest you use something better than hot glue to seal the new panel on there. I did that for my overhead console and its a MESS now as the panel is slowly falling down Hope that helps. Let us know how it turns out.

I took my old console and cut out a square where the switches used to go....so the holes for the switches were already cut and ready to go...as you can tell from the pic...it was just BARELY small enough to beable to fit in the ash tray location....but it sure did make things faster and neater not having to make the holes for the switches.

the only problem I had was getting the plate to line up perfectly with the ash tray hole on the corners....at first I didnt like how it looked...but when I put the cover on...you cant tell due to the hinges...so i didnt care. Of course if I had taken my time a bit more...im sure i could have gotten it perfect.

as far as the console fitting in....that has been discussed MANY times...just do a search......but from what Ive read...its much easier to put one into a bird than it is a camaro.
