Rear Window Trim

Hi, All. I recently had to replace the rear window in my 91 RS and ended up with a junk yard one due to the high price of a new one. The metal trim that is attached to the edge of the glass is pretty ratted out. I have noticed that 93 and up rear windows don't have this trim at all. Has anyone ever removed this metal trim on a thirdgen?

I'd like to know this too. Mine is also starting to look like crap and it would look a lot better if it just wasn't on there.

i think it is like a little supportive frame for the window. i know it doesn't hold anything together, so removing it probably wouldn't hurt anything. i need to repaint mine. ahh, so many little mods, so little time!!

I masked the glass and all around the metal strip, sanded some of the surface rust off, and painted it black with some Rustoleum. I would not reccommend removing the metal frame, that seems to be what supports the hatch glass.

Thanks for the replies.
According to the GM shop manual, the metal panel at the rear of the glass bolts thru the glass much like the hinges at the top of the glass. Soo, it would seem that the metal trim is just metal trim. I will keep watching this post. Thanks again.

I'm watching and waiting on this one too. I'd like to rip it off it's just there for some sort appearance and not functional.

ill add that if your hatch struts dont work then do not take it off, there is metal that goes around the bolts so it reinforces the glass, but if u do have hatch struts u should be ok
