I guess I asked that the wrong way... what kind of switches are they?

I was kind of thinking that. They are painless wiring, 12v switches. They will take a beating and keep on ticking. Run you about 10 bucks each though. Atleast thats what I paid for them at a race shop downtown St. Paul, MN. You could probably get them cheaper in Summit Racing. I never bothered to look.

hey? how are you guages working out. Didn't know if you had found a simpliar way to get the speedo to work correctly. How about your tach also?

Gauges are all hooked up (minus the speedo and tach) as well as the lighting for everything. I hooked up the blower motor to the fan switch so everything turns on. But that was just for my heater because I took my A/C out of the car.

As far as the speedo I have not completely hooked it up. I probably won't either; atleast not right away. I'm going to do the T-56 conversion in which case I will hook the speedo up to the correct VSS. I do have a VSS in my possesion; it would work with a TH700-R4, but I'm currently running a TH350.

The tach, well it would work but I have to hook it up with the filter, which I have yet to do. There is another guy in the MN F-body club that is running the same setup as me and hes got the tach working, but hasn't messed with the speedo.\

Everything will work as long as you have the correct wiring connections. It's not rocket science, but it helps to have the corret wiring diagrams so you can see what you need to hook into.

Also, automatic 4th gen consoles can be used. But, it does require some modification to the shifter location, the transmission hump in the floor, some grinding on high points in the shifter, stretching the shifter cables, and trimming some fat off the console.
Can these issues be remedied by using a complete 4th gen automatic shifter to match the console? or is the actual mounting location too far off for this to make a difference?

the clutch slave/master cylinder combo from LT1's is a direct swap into t-5's. comes with a better (steel braided) line too, so if your line gets to close to the header and pops cause of the heat like mine did go with one from a 4th gen

the 4th gen shifter is smaller so it should work with minimal modification.
I installed my 3rd gen shifter into my brothers 96 Trans Am last year. My dad was using the Trans Am and couldn't figure out the MegaShifter so I put that into my Formula.

The LS1 center console will work with a B&M megashifter. It will have to be modified a little for clearence and you can't use the spacers in the box. I put it in with my console and it sits perfect. Nice and low. I wrapped the shifter boot around the B&Ms handle. Looks like a stick. The geeks at the emmisions station tried to shift it into first for like 5 miniutes.

I do have a picture, but I don't know how to post it on the boards. I can E-mail it to you or you can walk me through posting it. I don't have a pic host though. The pic I have is of the finished product. I didn't think to take installation pics.

Do people even bother to read before they post? There are quite a few members running around here with 4th gen dashes. I see in at least 3 signatures in this thread where people say they have 4th gen dashes in the car. The one I like the most with a 4th gen is shr00m. (with my settings) On page 2 there is a 3rd gen with a new dash, has the B&N shifter and such

hey does anyone know if the 4th gen plastic T-Top holders will work in the 3rd gen? If ya dont knwo what im talking about, there are these plasic things in the bottom of the 4th gen trunk well that you can lock the t tops into. much more convienient then the bags. wondering if anyone has done this? i figure its gotta be a pretty close fit between a 4th gen trunk and a3rd gen trunk. so it shouldnt be too hard to modify if it doesnt fit exactly.

3rd gen t-tops have straight front and back edges, 4th gen ones are curved, the pockets match the curve and I have no idea how you'd make them fit...

It was mentioned above, but I didnt see any feedback on it... Will the 4th gen steering column work at all??? I have the column out of a 99 Z28 that Im stripping, and I havent looked at it real good...but my wheel is getting that wobble to it, and instead of tearing the column apart to tighten a few screws, Ide rather just use the nice tight new column. Plus if it fits Im sure the u-joint steering shaft can be made to work also... Let me know if anyone has tried it or knows if it will work. Thanks!

Justin

*edit*...eh...i found some info. looks like it might be a pain. I still might give it a try though. Guess if it works Ill be able to answer that question in the future!

For all those interested in installing 4th gen rear shoulder belts, I thought i would post a few pics of the notch that needs to be cut in order for them to fall in place. I used a dremel tool with a cutoff disc. Took me under 5 minutes. Hope this helps...

I found a 4th gen interior package...all 4 seats for 150.00 carpet for 75.00. Is carpet compatible? I can also take whatever else I want for just a little more cash so how hard is it to modify the door panels to fit? And what other plastic fits??? any rear plastic?

Carpet doesn't swap over, a pillars are about the only plastic that can fit, but you would need the 4th gen dash also. Consoles are swappable. Door panels can be done, do a search.

I would like to see a shot of the belt bracket where you cut for that notch but it looks like you shouldnt need to cut anything. That tab should go in sideways and "twist" 90 degrees like the old one otherwise in a hrd brake that could pop out of that slot. Again I would like to see the other shot of that tab before I pass complete judgement though

The notch has to be cut since the 4th gen rear shoulder belt mounting bracket is slightly shorter than that of a stock thirdgen. I could easily get the tab on the 4th gen belt to drop into the original slot on the car without even having to twist anything, but then I would be unable to bolt it down. In picture 2 the belt bracket is resting over the bolt with no more play to pull it or twist it over the stock slot.

I guess I am confused. Again another picture from the other angle would be able to clear it up for me. If you dont have one though it doesnt matter, I am not running rear seat belts at all. I just wondered

Just scored a complete set of power leather seats and belts out of a 01 Firebird at the local scrapyard today. Nice shape, aside from one tiny tear they are mint, looks like someone got in with something sharp in thier pocket. I paid 300 for the setup.

All I got done today was removal of my old seats and belts and started installing. I only got the rear seats and belts in so far and I thought I would verify some others posts...

First off they went in my 92 RS, it had a split rear seat and while the new non split mounted exactly as the old one, I did have those two posts that were mentioned before. They stick out right above the hump...I guess I could cut them off and I probably will.

The rear belts Do Not bolt right in, like others have said they are shorter in length and taller in height than the 3rd Gens. You Must cut that notch, not really a big deal with a dremel. Also the belt mechanism plastic cover does not fit because of the 4th gens belts difference in height. Had to cut a decent size piece with the Dremel but it still looks good.

Also, I've already had the rear view mirror and shift handle mounted in my car for awhile...

The car was an automatic, really nice before whoever wrecked it did so. Just came into the yard, only thing really missing was the wheels and rear carpet.
I thought about taking the console and even eyed the dash for awhile...Has nice door panels too.

I saw those plastic T-top holder thingies in the trunk, but had no clue what they were, so I left them. And I took the T top shades, they are real nice, just too small for the 3rd gens tops...

Here is my complete list of conversion parts I have done.

*All the interior will fit with minor adjusting and trimming. The rear sail panels will fit but with a good bit more trimming and adjusting and will need to use your 3rd gen trim piece that is black and hold your 3rd gen sail panel in place.
*The carpet will fit with a couple of cuts under the passanger seat.
*The door panels will fit but the are short at the bottom of the door. I used the bottom half of the 3rd gen door panel as a filler.
*The dash will fit but is about 2 to 4 inch's narrower then the 3rd gen on, but looks much better.
*Seats and seat belts will fit.
*Door weather stripping is needed to use the kicker panels. The door will sound much more solid with this weather strpping on.
*even the back interior panels will fit.
*I had no luck with the a-pillars due to I have a t-top car and had coupe pillars.

Exterior
* gas tank fits
*rear end gears and carriar
*rear sway bar will fit but was thinner then my 83 sway bar so keep what I had
*Motor,trans,drive shaft
The rack and pionion steering is to wide.
Still have a complete brake swap yet to try but want to drive the car for a while before that.

later plastic one or earlier steel? if the plastic one fits it sounds like a nice choice for dealing with all the corrosion that the ethanol that they're adding to the gas lately is going to cause.

I used steel, but have heard of the plastic on fitting as well.

The plastic tank is a drop in fit too with the exception of the filler neck is a little long but there is a rubber coupler that you can trim. I havent mounted mine yet though. If you get the "T" block from the 4th gen fuel setup it even plumbs right in, although it eliminates the 3rd gen return, so if you want the same routing you will have to figure something out.

What about a 4th gen T/A spoiler. I know companies sponsored here make ones that fit but I don't have $300 laying around. So will it fit with some mods?? I know new holes will have to be drilled. I'm talking size wise????

I'm looking to put 4th gen seats in my 84.

I would like to get leather, just curious what prices are most people paying for the front and rears? I'm looking at the charcoal/dark grey color.

Also rear the rear seats will fit my 84 too right? Looks like they will, and I didn't see anything mentioned in this thread.

Thanks
Chris.

Here is a pic of the 82 style sill plates beside the newer style. These work great for the 4th gen seat belt upgrade. The 82's don't have the retractor in the floor, just in the roof like the 4th gens do.
