I have been running the idea of painting a few of the interior pieces of my car, and was curious to see if anyone one else here as done it as well. If so pictures would be greatly apreciated, and i will put up a photoshop of what I would like to do ASAP.

 

i did with krylon fusion black i took all peices out washed with dishsoap hung on cloths line and sprayed them this is a bad old pic speaker covers are gone now nice black ones now lol

how does the stuff hold or last?

will it scratch or rub off with ur finger nail


i really wanna paint some of my red interior pieces but im just afraid this stuff wont hold and turn out bad...anyone else have experiance with different products or the same please let me know.

 

I just painted all my red plastics to black. They came out like the pics posted above, i was extremely impressed.

I used the Dupli Color cloth/vinyl/plastic "gloss black" spraypaint. Just do good prep and you'll be fine.

 

it holds great still looks the same and its been like 8-9 months i can get a better picture it only has gotten scratched where i open and close the well lid in the back but thats rubbin pretty bad i dont think a finger nail would scratch it my kickpannels are still perfect where my feet go

 

Go yo your local auto paint store and get SEM auto interior paint. It's flexible and dries hard. Some plastic paint dries nice until you leave it out in the sun with the windows rolled up and it gets hot and the paint gets sticky again.

Correct. I also scuffed up the plastic a little bit with a 3M "scotchbrite" style pad, to give the paint a better surface to stick to.

 

 

Lots of paint there. Looks like someone spent some time changing colors... and for the better.

Personally, I like what some folks are doing with wood grain but for the kick panels and console, there are many options it looks like. Nice work S_Z.

Ya you should run down to your local GM dealer and pick up some replacement panels. Sheesh what a dumbass what are you supposed to do if you want to change colors buy someone elses junk that is probably worse than what you have. Theres not a hole lot of options if you want to change. Do you know how much a set of junkyard all black panels sale for around 150-250 and thats without door panels,seat belts or seats. Then since everything is big shipping is around 100 then buy the door panels,seat belts and seats wow you spent a grand easy. Hey and for your info i didnt paint anything i used spray dye on everything there is a difference. Spray paint probably would not be the best thing.

I just started painting my interior plastics. I'm using DupliColor Textured Metallic paint and it looks great. This stuff is pretty durable too. I also plan on clearing all the pieces for a little more protection. I cleaned all parts with laquer thinner and am very pleased with the results. I'll get some pics up as soon as I find my camera.

 

If you do it right nobody will even know. I dont really think saving money is retarded. To each his own.

hey f355 that looks great thats what i was planing on doing to my 86. what products did you use and what kind of prep. also did you do the whole dash too? how did that go?

 

Well i went and bought a big can of wax and grease remover to prep all of the surfaces. Then i used krylon fusion on all the plastics and did light coats and built up the layers. Then i used dupli color vinyl and fabric dye on the door panels and the carpet.
The headliner and the sail panels i went to the fabric store and bought materials and redid them.

 

I've been thinking about redoing my interior also, but keep the original color. This topic has been talked about so much on this board, but I think painting is a bad idea. This is just my opinion, and while it might look good after you do it, I don't think it will hold up for the long term. I've heard of people going 2 years after painting their interior and it still looks good. That may be true but how will it look 5 or 10 years later?? Especially with alot of wear and tear. Also my big concern is cleaning products. After cleaning the interior over and over I'm sure the cleaning products will take their toll on the paint. I've heard a lot of bad things about Krylon fusion, especially when the interior gets hot. This is true with any paint...heat is bad for it. Alot of people say it is a really good product. I personally won't take that chance, but that is just me. I think the best thing to do would be to re-dye the plastic pieces. I think it looks better and it holds up alot better than paint.

Can sumone please photoshop the blue and white dash so that all the blue peices are silver and all the white peices are black-the only exception being the dashpad...make it black???

 

in 5-10 years just repaint them...its not that hard to repaint something

Token is reffering to an older post that is worth reading. In the post he and many others told of their stories and experiences with painting their interiors. I forget what the thread was. Maybe he will remember and post a link to it. Bottom line with spraying interior is that it is cheap so you might repainting it in a year or two or three. It might also rub off or weather well. But at $5 a can, who can not afford that?

 

I didn't change color, but I sprayed all my black interior pieces with SEM trim black. They came out great, makes everything like new. Arm rests, dash, A pillars, Door handles ETC... looks like new. Sprayed my manual shift plate and used Lincoln brand shoe polish on the leather boot, results were awsome.

anyone who happens to run across this thread...don't listen to Token...he has no idea what he's talking about. Anyhow, here is a picture of mine...came out great...and I've had no problems at all.

You gotta luv this some of the nicest cars that people drool over have painted interiors.

 

It might not be hard buy why do it more than once?? My philosophy is do it right the first time. That's just me though. I want to restore my '82 interior to like new from the factory. I guess if you have a car that you don't want to keep then paint it. I personally am going to be keeping my car and not selling it. So for me, I would rather have it done right and have it look right. I guess If you don't plan on a restoration then my comments don't mean anything. I know I'm not the only one who feels this way though.

 

The guy I bought my firebird from must really be a major retard, because my Firebird is covered in paint, its all over the outside too!

 

Where are you buying all your brand new panels from?

 

i bought all black int panels for my 1988 gta at a junk yard for a total of $80. what i got was door sill plates, kickpanels, radio delete sail panel/speaker covers, rear hatch cover, the hatch motor cover, headliner peice that goes in the back, a/c delete heater box, and a set of a/c delete heater controls.

i doubt if done right the paint will even get messed up after 5-10 if taken care of...

Im gonna do it myself once my car is back from the shop...if it works, its works if not then ill strip them all back down or just buy black panels...painting them sounds ALOT cheaper right now so im gonna try it and find out

 

Thats not even half the interior.

 

There is actually a fabric spray paint out now called simply spray, you can get it at fabricspraypaint.com. I havent tried it yet but it looks as if it might work well. I can also get this stuff at almost half price if anyone is interested let me know.

who said anything about buying new panels?? I said I would rather dye than paint. Simple as that. Look in any factory shop manual and it will say the same thing. For me this is the better alternative in my opinion. I'm not trying to convince anyone what way is better. People are going to do what they want. I just think it looks better, that's all.

 

I think that painting fabrics is another bad idea. It's only good for the same color, but I still think that getting new carpeting would be the best bet.
