I fixed it by forcing marine expoy into the holes and followed up with a liberal apllication on top of that. The fix has lasted for more than 10 yrs now.

I also put some rubber around the filler neck out near the boddy to keep it from flexing as I fill up with gas and hit bumps.
My 1989 z28 failed a test only smog because of a leaky filler neck. Cost over $700 to fix

Indeed it is an open recall.....problem is dealerships no longer have detailed description of recall on file so they don't know the proper procedure for determining if theres a problem or not. When they run your vin all it says is open recall for "crack at filler neck" and thats it. No details on the recall. Keep us updated.

Re: Gas Tank Recall...Read if you have a 1991 Camaro RS.....

I went to dealership today about the recall. They had to order a aftermarket tank, it should be here in 2 days. I had to wait all day for GM corp to ok the aftermarket tank, GM does not make the tank any more. I tried to get a loaner but GM would not give me one.
Should I be worried about the panel I cut out to replace a bad fuel pump? It is sealed up, but i cut the fuel lines & repaired them with hose. I don't want them to say they can't fix it because of the repaired fuel lines, what do you think?

to be quite honest with you I'm totally surprised that they agreed to do recall work on an 18y/o car.

that being said, the recall is on the filler neck, not on the fuel lines, and also not on the sender, so they should just replace the tank and drop your existing sender/lines in it. If you want it replaced you better tell them and pay for it.

Re: Gas Tank Recall...Read if you have a 1991 Camaro RS.....

Mine started leaking this past week after filling tank up. Called dealer to see if I had an open recall and they said no after i gave them my VIN. I asked if there was anything else i could do since i was having the problem the recall stated. They gave me the number to GM corp and said to call them. I called them and they started to tell me the same thing, that i had no open recall. But then the lady said something about she remembered there was a recall for the problem and put me on hold so she could do some "research". She came back in about a minute saying there was a recall for this problem But get this. She told me " My car wasnt affected by the recall, so rest assured that i should feel safe nothing would happen to my car" WTF...

I then told the lady that the problem HAS HAPPENED to my car. She then repeated the same to me...I about flipped on her. But held my cool and said to her " Ma' am, the problem has happened to my car," and went on to read the recall summary and consequences to her.

She then told me that i should take my car to a dealer and have them diagnose the problem and if they found it to be cracked they would replace it for free, I said thanks and then she said she would call me in a few days to see how things turned out.

I then called the dealer back and told them what was said. and then set up a time for me to bring my car in for them to look at it.

They called me back after they verified the problem and said they were waiting on GM Corp to approve an aftermarket tank to be installed. Good thing is one of the local dealers has one. So once GM says OK, they ll get the tank and replace it.
I also have a fuel pump access door cut with compression fittings on the lines i cut. And the service manager said nothing about not doing it because of that reason, after I told them I done it that way.

Sorry for the long winded post. But wanted to tell my story.

After a week and a half of arguing with gm's district customer service support and them "TRYING TO find a stock tank SOMEWHERE out there" they finally agreed to get me an aftermarket tank and will be getting mine replaced this friday.

Re: Gas Tank Recall...Read if you have a 1991 Camaro RS.....

We wouldn't be having to wait 18 years to get our tanks fixed if the dealers would have fixed them. I've had my Camaro for several years, driving with gas pouring out the back (especially when I try to fill it up). It's a convertible, so I rarely drive it. It's sitting in my garage as we speak. I finally spent around $400 for a new aftermarket tank, fuel pump, straps and what not to get this thing working properly. This blog has me recharged to try and see if I can find a Chevrolet dealer that will fix it. MAYBE after all these years, one or two service dudes will 'remember' fixing one of these and will fix it under the recall. My parts will arrive to Advance Auto parts this next week. MAYBE I can get some sort of commitment from Chevrolet. When I had taken it to the dealer last time, they recognized the recall but they were dumbfounded how to get paid by GM. That was their primary concern - if they fixed it, they MIGHT NOT get paid from GM; wierd. Seems like GM ought to buy up some 'aftermarket tanks' and just get these things fixed. I don't know if anyone has left a number to contact GM, but I think it's 1-800-630-2438.

Re: Gas Tank Recall...Read if you have a 1991 Camaro RS.....

If it helps any body-my 91 firebird parts car had the cracked tank filler neck.
I had to remove it to put it in another car and I could hear it clunk when I moved it up and down.
It was no big deal for me as I was removing it anyways. (tank)
I took it to a local radiator repair shop and he re soldered it for $20.

It would still be a big pain to pull the tank just for the leak but they can be fixed. HTH

Is this recall still in effect? My gas tank has some surface rust. Will they give me a new gas tank at the dealership? Because I'm going to need a new one soon... Thanks!

Re: Gas Tank Recall...Read if you have a 1991 Camaro RS.....

i just bought a 91 camaro rs about a week ago none of the gauges worked (NONE!) the guy said he thought it was a short, and not bad fuse? anyway it was the FUSE they all work fine now EXCEPT FUEL GAUGE! and when i get gas it constantley stops like the tank is full even when I know its damn near empty. the other day i just kept pupmping by letting go of the trigger and starting again about 20 times than about 3 gallons of gas starting pooring out under the car somewhere nar where the filler neck would attach to the tank. IS THIS BECAUSE OF THE RECALL PROBLEM YOU GUYS ARE TALKING ABOUT???? I hope so because it takes me about ten minutes to pump $5 worth of gas and i wont even try filling my tank because im worried it will start pooring out when i hit that certain point wherever it is

Not sure...I am having the same thing done with my car. I don't get how you guys are getting ran in circles by your local dealership. I took mine in, gave them the part of the vin they needed. They told me it had not been fixed and ordered the dye goop crap that they use to check it. Its only the second time I have taken something to them (first time was to replace a starter on a 74 C-10 w/ 454) and even then I didn't get hassled and they were up front on everything.

Maybe it's because I talked with the service manager to begin with.

go to your local dealership. the recall is a safety one so it does not expire. the person you talk to will have to do some searching but it does exist. they will need the last 4 of your vin to see if it has been fixed or has been looked at previously. dont let them mess with you.

luckily, mine was ok.

THE NATIONAL TRAFFIC AND MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY ACT, AS AMENDED, PROVIDE THAT EACH VEHICLE WHICH IS SUBJECT TO A RECALL CAMPAIGN OF THIS TYPE MUST BE ADEQUATELY REPAIRED WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME AFTER THE OWNER HAS TENDERED IT FOR REPAIR. A FAILURE TO REPAIR WITHIN SIXTY (60) DAY AFTER TENDER OF A VEHICLE IS PRIMA FACIE EVIDENCE OF FAILURE TO REPAIR WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME.
IF THE CONDITION IS NOT ADEQUATELY REPAIRED WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME, THE OWNER MAY BE ENTITLED TO AN IDENTICAL OR REASONABLY EQUIVALENT VEHICLE AT NO CHARGE OR TO A REFUND OF THE PURCHASE PRICE LESS A REASONABLE Allowance FOR DEPRECIATION.

IF AN IGNITION SOURCE WAS PRESENT, FUEL LEAKAGE RESULTING FROM THIS CONDITION COULD RESULT IN A VEHICLE FIRE.
TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION, DEALERS ARE TO INSPECT THE FUEL TANKS OF INVOLVED VEHICLES AND REPLACE THOSE TANKS THAT EXHIBIT THE CRACK OR "PIN HOLE" CONDITION.
IN ADDITION, FOR VEHICLE'S WHICH REQUIRE FUEL TANK REPLACEMENT, OWNER'S ARE BEING INFORMED THAT AN ALTERNATE MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION WILL BE PROVIDED FREE OF CHARGE UNTIL THE FUEL TANK REPLACEMENT IS COMPLETED.

Re: Gas Tank Recall (fixed)

I have an 1986 IROC that I was putting a 91 RS tank in. After getting the tank in I found that I had little to no fuel pressure. Then after taking the tank back out and trying to dump the gas out, I see that the neck tank connection was wet. The next day I found this post and did not want to put the tank back in. Since it was going in a 1986 the recall would not be available to me. I was scared a hell, but I drained the tank and rinsed it out with soap and water. Then I put the tank on its edge and filled it with soap and water with the filler neck straight up. With a soldering iron, I resoldered the connection. Worked very well, but as I said I was scared as hell doing it.

Re: Gas Tank Recall (fixed)

Well it sounds like you did the right thing. I had a 91 bird tank that I pulled out and put in a 86 T/A. Mine had been completely empty for months so I had a radiator repair guy solder mine.

In my project car, I am using a 305 TB and the complete harness from the base FB so I put a new pump for a 91 tb 305 car and installed it before I put the tank in. Car is running now.

The only point I would like to make;
The filler neck does not determine fuel pressure- my parts car ran fine fuel wise even though it leaked at the filler neck.
Just be sure to use the correct pump for the engine being used. Throttle bodies run on 12 regulated psi. TPI's like my wifes gta run at much higher psi. (45)

I hope this can help you.

Re: Gas Tank Recall...Read if you have a 1991 Camaro RS.....

Wondering if anyone has recently had their tank replaced under warranty. My filler neck is cracked and my vin falls within the range for the recall. Most people especially dealerships don't understand that recalls are good for the life of the vehicle. Part that people get confused is about the 10 year limit. That 10 year limit is only if you car or truck was older than 10 years when the recall came out. Seeing mine is a 1991 and the recall came out in 1994 it is good for the life of the car no matter age, mileage, or ownership. Only thing that can void the recall is if my car has a salvage title or has been in a wreck that would have damaged the filler neck, none of which have happen. I hope I cleared up that part about that recalls don't expire what so ever. Only time that a manufacture can say that they expired is that the car was older than 10 years when the recall came out; and the age is then determined by when it was first sold (first owner sold to or what shows up on the title) not the year or date of manufacture.

Re: Limitations on remedy of defects...

Recall doesn't expire as some people say. It is good for the life of the car. Recall came out when the car was only 3 years old. Only time the 10 year comes into effect is if the car was older than 10 years when the recall came out.

I know that in general you are 100% right about this but I am curious if it is still a good recall after they filed bankruptcy. This did get GM out from under alot of things like this due to the age of the vehicles. As far as I could tell they had (due to the bankruptcy) 10yrs back and newer to be held liable. They still have to make parts available for the 10yrs even for Pontiac's but it seemed that the wording exempted them from any earlier recalls etc.
Did I understand the bankruptcy wrong? I hope so I have a 91 Firebird.
Maybe someone on here knows more about this???

From what I understand is that recalls no matter if the company goes belly up have to be taken care of by them. Seeing they did go belly up and then get bailed out by the gov and then became Government Motors warranties were still honored and since they are still in business the recalls still stand under federal law.

Re: Gas Tank Recall...Read if you have a 1991 Camaro RS.....

There is another form name gas tank recall and there was a person not too long ago that was was able to get their car fix even tho it didn't show up in the gm system. Besides gm went to a new system for the gin info and they didn't put cars that were 15 years or older in there. Even tho its law they have to keep record of even car sold. Also does your vin follow in the break points?

Also did you bring them the gm info that was in the link I provided? They should be able to pull this campaign number in their system 92C36. It will have the info that was in the link and is the only info about this recall in their system.

Re: Gas Tank Recall...Read if you have a 1991 Camaro RS.....

I've tried for the last few months to get this applied to mine. I removed the tank and physically saw cracks at the filler next. Also failed the soapy water test. After multiple attempts contacting GM corporate and various dealers in my area, I've decided to purchase one myself.

Mine is in the shop and they said it was under the recall but can't get the parts so gm has sent a regional manger to look at my car.

Re: Gas Tank Recall...Read if you have a 1991 Camaro RS.....

Mine is currently in the shop and they said it had a recall by just looking at the documents I provided to the dealership. Here is the copy of my service invoice now they have gotten the car fixed yet or approved an aftermarket tank. Only thing they said it does have one.

***Update***
GM Approved to have the test done on the car!!! So everyone that has the same problem don't give up the recall is still valid!!! Only thing to note I forgot about my aftermarket exhaust that it was 100% welded and has to be cut off to replace the tank if it gets to that point.

Yup they replaced the tank for free only thing I paid for was for a new pump since it was original and wasn't pumping its full amount that it should have been.

Re: Gas Tank Recall...Read if you have a 1991 Camaro RS.....

I recently purchased a 1991 B4C Camaro with 13k original miles; it falls right into the affected VIN range.

When I fill it up to max capacity (meaning there's probably some fuel in the filler neck), I noticed a faint smell of gas. It goes away after some brief driving and doesn't come back until I top it off at a gas station, so I never thought much of it until I read this thread. When I unscrew the gas cap, there's good fuel pressure and the sound of it being released, so if there are leaks they can't be big.

Is there any way I can visually check the leaks before bringing it to the dealership?

Our dealership is decent so I'll give them a note and see what they say. I'll be sure to include the full recall information/language. A print-out from the NHTSA wouldn't hurt. I'll update on what comes from it.

If it needs a replacement, does anybody know if you can still get a 1LE baffled fuel tank?
