Functional '82-'84 Trans Am PowerBulge Hood Info
If anyone owns or has a good knowledge of the components and usage of the solenoid controlled cowl-induction set-ups on the '82-'84 Trans Ams, please let me know. I have a question that I would like answered.
I have a '90 Formula. I have taken out the block-off plate on the cowl opening with hopes of coaxing in a little more fresh air to my open element air-cleaner. I have always been slightly worried about too much water going through the opening. I was browsing the net and found a reference to the old 'functional' set-up. They were describing the components that were involved. They listed the following part: OEM drip pan for grille insert for back of scoop (keeps rain out). Can anyone elaborate more on this part? Is this part of the solenoid 'flapper' assembly? Or, is this a separate part that attaches to the opening in the hood? I would like to add this part to my hood if it would help keep water out. Thank You!

I think I have that funky metal plate in my garage, collecting dust... Just a blockoff plate, with a few holes to mount in place of the "honey comb" that's currently there.
Not sure if my car had a vacuum operated door, to open something, but right now it's just open (well, honey comb thing there...)
Here's what i'm going to do sooner or later
air2
I have the air cleaner lid, from a 250 I6 chev motor in the wreckers, they're common as borscht in poland..... I just haven't built the plate to seal this to the hood of the car... but it probably still helps a bit...

the "functional" setup is a whole big plastic unit, basically its just designed with an area where water can pool and drain out before it even gets to the flapper door

I have two of those lying around in my garage, I never found out for what they are used, but now that you are talking about the rain it would make scence, yet I would have no idea where to put it.
I can go to the garage tomorrow and take a pic of it if it helps. Could you possibly list the URL you had on the setup? I have a 89 Formula and would like to make the cowl functinal also!
Thx
Cedric

A close-up picture of the part I'm asking about would be great! I can find a lot of pictures of the whole assembly. But, I would really like to see a picture of the 'drain' part.

its not a "part", its just built into the design of the whole thing
the "big plastic peice" i refer to is roughly as big as your air cleaner all together
if they made a drain peice for just regular open cowl openings then I dont know about it.. however would be really simple to make
mines been open for years collecting rain water, my car is fine ;p
picture is dark but anyways thats what one looks like

Just for the record, it's this part. It's a separate piece of plastic that is glued to the air intake assembly. It installs just behind the grill. Essentially, it's just a small trough so that any rain water that flows down the hood into the grill gets drained away from the top of the air cleaner. Otherwise it just pools up on top of the air cleaner.
