paint stripper question
if your using a liguid paint stripper. I've heard its very messy.
once its eaten up the paint to the point where the paint is ready to be scrapped off the car.
what kind of gloves to wear? and what tool to scrap the paint off?
and my biggest question is what is the legal or best way to dispose of the old paint and used paint stripper???

usually paint stripper is more like jello, so its somewhat easy to control but its not like splashing water. you should use a scraping tool to scrape the paint away. and for gloves...if your that worried about it you can get chemical gloves from the same store you bought the stripper from. i just use latex gloves but ive built an immunity to it and it doesnt affect me, others will burn up at the sight of it (perhaps you should read the label on the back of the can)
cleanup is the easiest...if your in the middle of nowhere and its not illigal to burn leaves, put the paint and stuff on the driveway, pour on some paint thinner, light a match and lite er' up, looks cool and you can watch the paint burn away (dont roast hot-dogs on it tho). if you really care about the enviroment that much you can gather up the remains and throw them in a plastic bag and trash it...hippy.

ok sounds good guys. But since this would leave me with nothing but bare metal. Any suggestions on jsut priming with some quick spray can paint. and like the next day take it to a shop to prime and paint properly?
i'm jsut trying to get the body prepped for a good paint job and i'll get half the job doen myslef if i can to save on shop labor.

umm...if your gonna paint right over it...then dont bother stripping the paint. its best to just sand the car with like 320 wet/dry (dont wet it tho) and then take it to them...have it primed and then you can start feathering and stuff like that. unless thers lots of rust, in which case then yes i guess its ok to use a can of primer, but prep that bare steel properly and make that you buff away all the rust and also make sure there is no bare metal is left when painting...oh and when your done stripping, clean off the car w/ the paint prep degreaser and DO NOT touch that bare steel w/ your bare hand or itll get moisture and rust (my car suffered that fate and my $1500 paint job went for a **** and now has bubbles down the back of the car). prep it and prime it, simple as that.

So you're thinkin about strippin your car? How many paint jobs are on it? If ya got a couple strip it if ya only have one sand it.. If ya strip it be careful if you use a putty knife, you can gouge the sheetmetal pretty easy.
----------
By the way, I talked to you before remember? It might be easier to D.A. down, the stripper will soften up your body filler and should probably be removed and replaced. OK?

ok thanks guys, there are some rust areas. but not on the whole car moslt on the rear quarter panels the front has none since i'm just replacing all of it.
but yea tahnks for the advice anything else just keep throwing it at me.
I'd rather paint it myself but i don't trust myself with a paint gun.

Make sure if ya strip it you buy an aircraft stripper it's the strongest, the normal stripper is a waste of time and money...

its best to just sand and paint over your origional paint then. what you should do first tho is deffinately get rid of that rust, sand the metal down till there is no rust, then prep the bare metal with the proper primer, then if needed, use icing (very fine bondo) to fill in possible uneven spots from sanding and they you can use your blocksander. its deffinately cheaper to do bodywork yourself but if you dont know how to paint and your lookin for something to last then i suggest you go to your paint shop and ask them to help you out with painting the base and clear coats. thats how i got mine done, i did most of the bodywork and then a guy at the dealership did it "under the table" for a very reasonable price.

depends on how nice of a job you want and what kinda connections you have, every shop is different, phone around and get them to do an estimate. i cant give you an estimate cuz im in canada but i paid only 600 for mine under the table, including the paint and the time.
