fixing some small rust damage

I have some rust on the passengers corner on my 1986 Iroc-Z28. I am not sure how to exactly go about fixing it, I dont think it will be too hard, I do have a nice mig welder and some welding skills from custom exhaust work and building a few trailers, but never body work.

I need to patch the 1/4 panel using metal or Tiger hair? Then put a small layer of bondo down and smooth it out I assume. This is really the only problem spot on the car, surprisingly none of the floor pants have significant rust..

these pics suck, i will try to get better ones up asap, Also I got a pic of my autometer dash and 1le heater box i just got installed

Here we go....

Re: fixing some small rust damage

I can't really see your problem that well, but if I were you I'd take a cut off wheel and cut out the rust on the fender lip, cut it out in a nice square, then take that square you cut out, and get some 18 gauge sheet metal and cut out a pecie to look like the hole you just made, you can use the peice you cut out as a template. Then take your new peice and butt weld it to the cut out you made. When you weld don't lay a bead, instead leap frog tac welds and take brakes so you don't warp the pannel. It's best to cut your new peice ever so slightly bigger than the hole so you can trim it to fit your hole perfectly. Butt weld the new peice, and then grind your weld down smooth, when grinding take brakes too allow for cooling so the pannel doesn't warp, also don't just grind in one spot move around. Following that use a proper body work hammer if possible; a regular hammer will work, and tap the weld so that there is a slight indentation were the new peices is, go ahead and sand the area with 36 grit sandpaper so the body filler has tooth to grab to, following that use a lightweight body filler and apply a thin layer over the patch and then paint. Unfortunately you can't easily get behind the new patch to seam seal it, but this fix is the most perminant you can do. If you want instructions and pics on how to bondo a dent which is basically what you will have after you tap around the weld, read my build thread call 350 Swap+Build Thread. I just posted a bunch of body work I did today.

Good Luck, DacMan

yep thats what I will be doing on mine. I actually cut a whole panel out of a donor car and I am gonna make a patch and weld it in.

Yeah that's another way to do it, I don't know the extent of your rust Jammin'Trey but if it's more than a hole, I would suggest looking for a donor car to steal the lower half of it's quarter pannel.
