Using early T/A taillights in later year car

I searched and could not find anything even though I know I read something here on it. I am putting the 82-84 T/A taillights on my 91 Firebird. I was given a set when I bought the Bird and it has a broken 91 base taillight anyways. I remember reading that the trunk lock needs to be changed out but that is all I was ever able to find. I put the center section in and of course it hit the trunk lock. I thought (never looked) that I would buy a 82-84 trunk lock and put it in. When I got it and looked I knew that it would not work due to the electric pulldown style hatch.
My solution was easy and no cost. I drilled out the rivets on the original lock to remove it. I then carefully unhooked and pried the plastic spacer off the lock. Put a gasket in and then bolted the lock in with 1/4 X 1 Bolts with a slotted head. Using a flat washer and a lock washer inside and tightened it down. I hooked the connector back on and now the center section does not hit the trunk lock.
None of the threads I read ever said how to do this so I thought I would pass it along. The best part is that I still have all the locks still matching.
I could have riveted it in. I could tack the nut on with my welder. But this should work as the center section would have to be broken to get at the bolts. The height was perfect and it can be put back to original if I want different taillights later.
I know that these taillights are not the most popular but I am hoping this will help somebody else later.
