third brake light location
Ok I've been a member of this board for quite some time , have read the camaro white book , have had 8 third gens , reserched the diferance between the year groups to find the best qualitys and to find the best parts, like 82-83 being the only years with factory glass hoods, and 86 being the only year with the third brake light at the top of the back window, I got some guy insisting he has an all original 89rs with the third brake light at the top of the back window-- what do you guys think!

Re: third brake light location
89 RS should have had it in the rear spoiler. He probably just hasn't accounted for the fact that, he hasn't owned the car since the showroom, and therefore anyone could have changed rear decks at anytime.

Re: third brake light location

not sure of the years . some early ones had none . then they had them on top of the hatch . then they were in the spoiler (89's) , and last were inside top of the glass . i would bet a 6 pk. that his does not work . more likely than not his rear glass has been replaced at some point in time . cheers !!! Re: third brake light location
86 is the only year it was on the OUTSIDE of the rear glass. The later years where it was "on" the glass. It was INSIDE under the glass.
But yeah...His 89 has had the hatch replaced at some point. I forget exactly where the 3rd brake was then. In the spoiler?

'86 was on the outside top of the hatch glass. '87-'90 Z28's was 5 separate bulbs in the spoiler on the hatch. '91-'92 Z28's with the Aero spoiler and RS's were inside the top of the rear glass.

Re: third brake light location
I have had the 86 Iroc , the brake light was on the out side of glass.
I have a 89 now, brake light on the spoiler.
I have a 91 RS brake light on inside of glass.
The rear hatch glass had to be replaced! for sure!

Re: third brake light location
The only other year the 3rd brake light was on the outside glass was 1987. It was only on the glass if you purchased a car without the rear spoiler. By 1988, there were only 2 options, Sport Coupe and Z28, which both had rear spoilers. All 1989 RSs has the light in the rear spoiler. If the car in question does not have a spoiler light and only a glass light, then the rear hatch has been replaced. If it has both, then the rear glass was replaced. As was mentioned, I will also bet that the brake light doesn't work in the glass.

Re: third brake light location
The '86 model year was the first year for the "Third" brake light for all cars made. The '86 camaro was located on the top outside of the hatchback glass. I'm sure that the '87 thru '90 had it in the spoiler. The '91 and '92 camaro's had it in the inside top of the hatchback glass.
