Rear window louvers question?

I've been looking for some rear window louvers but it seems from what I've read i need to make sure i get the correct ones. So which louvers are the best? The aluminum 1-piece? aluminum 3-piece? Or the plastic 1-piece/3-piece?

Also i like the flat ones going down, not the bulky ones.

I think i got lucky,haha.

I found some local aluminum ones that came from the factory off of a 86. They are in mint condition the guy stored his car and never had time to drive it and he wasnt a fan of louvers so he sold them. I got them cheap. They have the gm part # and everything. Ill post up some pics later!

see i really wanted the aluminum for my car, i liked how they were more flat than the plastic ones and more durable, and for the price i couldnt beat it.

But yours look great! My car probably wouldnt be able to pull them off.

Re: Rear window louvers question?

i had some cragars on a 85z and in my opinion the hardware that attached them were cheap. i have a factory set on my 87 iroc now and they are great, they dont vibrate or make noise when i hit bumps in the road like the cragars did. look around and see if you can find a set of gm they are alot better and have the prop rods to hold them up so you can clean the hatch glass.

I know its the factory 1986 louvers, and it doesnt seem to me that they are raised? Did you click on the thumbnail of the picture i included?

But the gm part number is either
10027846
or
618831

Not sure which one it is?

Re: Rear window louvers question?

I really need a set ASAP as i got tint thats, not the most "acceptable" to our friendly law enforcement officers. Apparently having a blacked out rear window is one of the biggest crimes you can commit with a vehicle. So i need louvers so i dont draw attention to my rear window and hopefully cops wont see that i have tint and just think the louvers make it look dark. If anyone has a good set that wil fit a 1983 Z28 with a rear wiper or even if they dont fit with the wiper i need them. I will pay good $ for them.

Because i love the way it looks with the blacked out tint. If i leave it on it will make the louvers look good enough for me to like them. The idea is, if louvers are on my car it will at look as if at least some of the darkness is caused by the louvers to cops sitting on the side of the road. I am fully aware that if you stand next to the car you can see it has tint and i like that because i hate how the rear window looks with no tint(even with louvers if no tint is under the louvers i still dont like it). Its ridiculously huge. With tint it looks good and the louvers will break up the outline of the now obvious tinted window. I hope you can picture what i am trying to say. I dont want louvers and i love the way it looks with tint, but i dont want to get pulled over for the tint again so i want louvers to make the huge 2% tinted window less obvious. I am hoping if a cop sees the car drive by the louvers will distract from the tint so they dont pull me over.

Re: Rear window louvers question?

You really can't have 2% tint and louvers. You won't be able to see out the window when backing up. The louvers do create blind spots. If you add louvers, you can remove the tint or at least lessen the tint effect by going to 30% or 50%.

Re: Rear window louvers question?

Thanks for the advice everyone! I bought a set of aluminum louvers from jegs about a month ago. They said they were in stock but after i ordered they emailed and said they were on back order When they arrived they were the wrong set. I wanted the ones with the fins going all the way down the window in the middle AND on the sides. Jegs instead sent plastic pieces that lay on both sides of the window and just the louvers in the middle! I contacted jegs before i bought them, and asked if they were louvers all the way down and on the sides and they said yes.

I do give them credit though, as they paid the return shipping and were not jerks about the whole thing. The good news was when i put them on(just laid them on the window) i could still see when backing up. It was a little harder but i can still back safely!

I have my Class A CDL so i am use to having a huge blind spot behind me when i back up!

I have 2 questions, the first one should be easy.

How do i set my the picture of the Z28 so that it appears under my name when i post in the forums? I have pictures in my album, but i cant find the option to set a profile picture.

The second is a question that should not really be in this forum but i really need as many people to see it as possible.

My electric radiator fan got stuck on when i turned the car off. It KEPT running even when the engine was turned off and the key was out,it kills the battery everytime. It just started doing that out of the blue. In the past as soon as i turned the key the electric fan turned on, but now it does not.

I read that the radiator fan should turn on when the temp gets to 180. I found the sensor for that and the wire was just hanging disconnected. I plugged it back in and now the fan turns on at 180, but still stays on when the engine is turned off.

I now bought a new battery and it does the same thing. I discovered that when i turn the defroster on it turns the fan off!! I make positive that i turn the defroster off after turning it on to stop the rad fan from running, but when i go to turn the car back on the battery is dead and needs jumped to start!!!!

I checked the wiring and i cant find any crossed wires.

Anyone that has had this problem and knows how to fix it, or just has some advice please send me a message! I am taking it to murrays electric tomorrow(made an appointment 5 days ago), but if the price is too high i want to fix it my self. Hopefully they will tell me whats wrong with the Z28 and not charge me a ton to find the problem.

Thanks for taking the time to read my long winded post. I am really upset that this has happened so i tend to talk a lot about this so sorry about that. Any advice would be appreciated!

I fixed the camaro a few days after i posted. It turns out it needed a radiator fan relay and from having to jump it so many times it caused the alternator to fry and thats why it would not hold a charge. I ended up making another thread about the problem and the first post told me that it was probably the rad fan relay! This is the best site, and all of the users are even better! That post saved me so much $ so the shop didnt have to charge to find that problem! They just had to test the alt and replace it, and it has been back on the road ever since!

Re: Rear window louvers question?

depends what your looking for. cragar and oem are the best in quality. my car has been outside for 10 years plus with them on and they hold up great. original factory louvers by far look best with cragar behind them in my opinion. otherwise read through this thread and do a search as their are a few others on this topic

been answered many times, you lucky if you can find them and buy them otherwise its usually just a c clip design with a rivet into the louvers. theres 2 on each side of my cragars.

Re: Rear window louvers question?

I have a set of gm factory louvers and the hardware, however im not sure what the best way is to adhere the clips to the hatch glass as the original sticky tape is gone. I also want to be able to remove the clips if necessary. Any thoughts????

Re: Rear window louvers question?

You can scrape off the existing adhesive and clean the mounting hardware as best you can. Go to the auto parts store and get some double sided molding adhesive. The only clips that require the double sided tape are the two that sit on the glass at the bottom and the two hinged clips at the top. The side pieces should have a rubber or plastic on them to protect the glass should they touch the glass, but they don't rest on the glass regularly.

Re: Rear window louvers question?

If anybody has a set of the original iroc louvers installed on there Camaro could you please possibly send or upload some pictures that show where all the mounting points are on the louvers to the window hatch that would be very helpful!

Is it 2 big aluminum c clips and 4 black clips ?... Not sure and don't want to grab the wrong hardware or have my Louvers fly off on the freeway.

Any response is widely appreciated thanks

Also i like the flat ones going down, not the bulky ones.
I like the aluminum ones, I found a cragar set .the kind with plastic sides for $50.typically ,you need to fab up your own mounting hardware, but its a small price to pay IMHO. get this, the temps inside my black t top car went down 20-25 deg. with them installed!! they are worth the investment

Re: Rear window louvers question?

I'm not sure I understand your request. The mounting points on the edge of the window are in alignment with the 1/4 turn screws on the louvers. All mounts wrap over the black window trim except for the two that sit on the glass at the bottom.

Justin, see the attached photo, if you zoom in you can see the clips at the top and bottom of the hatch. The other 2 clips not shown go along the side of the hatch. You should be able to attach the clips yo the louvers and then place them on the hatch and mark your spots on the glass. Hope this helps

Re: Rear window louvers question?

Since everyone seems to be asking louver questions here... Do I have some kind of rare louvers? They are SunShields by Kobel of San Antonio Texas. Thats stamped right into the aluminum. Cant say that Ive ever seen them before and google doesnt really bring anything up about them. They are a 3 piece design with an aluminum center and plastic sides. The center is also hinged to clean the rear window using a special key to release it. The reason why I say I havent seen them before is with the Cragars, the slots in the side peices are very large, with very little plastic. Mine are opposite, there is a good deal of plastic there with much smaller slots (and yes it creates a HUGE blind spot there)
