Is this worth it?

I apologize if this is in the wrong area. I was driving through town when i spotted this camaro in a platinum motors lot. I pulled in to check it out and wondered if a member from here brought it there. Its a full resto but seems a bit steep for me. The dealer wanted mid- 20's.

$50,000 restoration? Where's he hiding the bag of money?

The ZZ4 crate engine is a nice upgrade, I'm assuming you like the hood (I hate it personally, but it's a matter of taste), the stripes are missing, and I don't like the wheels. The miles are not particularly low either. According to the VIN, it *is* an IROC (F engine code = TPI 305), although I was skeptical before seeing this since the original engine and many of the identifying IROC features are gone. If I can be more picky, I also don't like the 4th gen seats. Convertible top looks like it might be original -- plan on adding $1,000 to the price of the car if you want to be able to see out the back window. Additional deductions for the aftermarket stereo and cheap looking speaker install.

As far as future collectibility, most of the changes they've made are going to hurt the value of this car. That being said, if everything is 100% working and the car has no major issues, I'd say it's worth probably $8-10,000 as it sits, *if* you like everything they've done to it (paint, wheels, hood, stereo, seats, no decals). So yeah, $25k for this car would be ridiculous.

Re: Is this worth it?

If he has receipts for $50,000 into that car, someone was overcharged! Engine, trans, wheels paint, cheezie speaker install, with high labor charge... $20,000 tops would be my guess. Anyone else wanna take a shot at 'Guess the restoration cost?'
Seriously, I was just looking at a new engine an trans for mine- I am going rebuilt 350 stock with a 030 overbore mind you, nothing fancy. But still, $2000 for the engine, with new accessories, maybe a little more for headers; trans at $1400 SHIPPED, 100,000 mile/3 year warranty. New carpet, 4th gen seats with new leather covers from Covergirl- $1000 total. $2000 for good paint if you do the prep yourself; $1200 wheels and tires, shipped; what's that, $6000 or so, plus $1-2000 labour to swap in the engine and trans and do the rest of the install yourself? All for under $10,000. Maybe add in another $4000 for a 'crate motor... still under $15,000. Let me know if this thing sells for north of $20,000 and I am going into the 3rd Gen flipping business, LOL!

Re: Is this worth it?

Everytime i see a thirdgen around town i try to stop and scope it out. Personally I dont like the hood or the wheels. Im not really a vert guy anyway. idk if they had a pic of the console area but when i when up to the window the buttons for the window and ragtop didnt look seated properly. there were a few minor things that they could have fixed. Ive always wanted a camaro but settled for a bird cause thts what came to me first. Sadly college doesnt allow me to have the funds to get toys like this lol. ill keep an eye out to see if it sells. the dealer said the car came from someone in marlboro NJ.
