welding a sheet instead of back seat?

Ok i am not putting seats back in my car since i will have a cage and i hate when people want to ride with you. i was planning on building some sort of sub box but i threw that idea out since stereo doesnt mean Sh*t to me. so i was thinking if i weld a steel sheet at an angle from about 4-5" from teh back of the seat to the top of the ridge behind the rear seat area would this work. and i will cover it with carpet and make it look kinda stock. i also thought what if you cut out the section behind the seats because the fuel tank would be gone, welded in a sheet of metal and dropped it down and fabbed a fuel cell area there would that work or am i in lala land. i dont plan on having a fuel cell in my car but it had crossed my mind once. and i thought about that idea. thanks anyone who replies.

I like the idea. If you can weld it wont be that hard. Unless your going to be racing your car legally, the hell with the cell. That sounds like a pain in the *** .

That seems pointless, and adds useless weight. If the only reason was because you didn't want to give rides, you have two options: (1) say "no" or (2) just take out the seats; if they do ride it won't be comfortable and they won't be asking much in the future.
And like Hulk0202 said, unless the car is a dedicated race car, why a fuel cell?

I've had the same idea for a long time about the 1992 Formula. When I come up with something, I'll post it here. Should be this year sometime. I'm actually thinking of making the rear seat area like the C4 Corvette (area behind front seats with 2 or 3 storage compartments and just a flat area.
The hatch area would be raised still, but i dont think this would look bad. i might keep the area directly behind the seats open too, so they can semi-recline. We will see.

i dont plan on having a fuel cell in this car. i was thinking about a 1984-6 Z28 that my buddy and i are looking into. and that would be just for racing. ok back to my car. i dont ever give people rides and i dont have back seats now. but i dont like the way it is all sunk in there. LIKE IT IS MISSING SOMETHING (maybe like the seats) but it isnt a very clean look and i want my car to look clean as can be. i have decided it would interfere with the side pillar covers. unless they were in when i measure and then weld. and i dont think it is going to work so i will go back to my old idea and build it with wood and kinda make it a speaker box. and weight doesnt matter. my car isnt going to the dragstrip king but it will kick any pusstangs a$$ out there. and anyways one sheet of 22 guage steel wouldnt add any weight compared to back seats anyway. and what weight is there is good weight. IT IS DIRECTLY OVER THE AXLE good deal for traction. but thanks for the replies and keep em coming..

Why don't you just lay a piece of metal over where the bottom of the seats should be, and then cover it with carpeting...you would have storage space...and it would look a lot better.

Since you don't want to give rides to people, put a bunch of rusty nails and spikes in the back where the seats go. No one will want a ride then because they will need an updated tetnus shot.

When I got my convertable, the rear seats were removed and there were wooden sheets in it's place under the carpet to flatten out the seat area. Even so, it still looked like it was missing something. I put the seats back in because it looked like crap without. (The folddown seat covered the area where the top folds into)

Just a sheet creased down to fill in the rear seat area, with maybe an access panel held closed with dzus fasteners and covered with matching carpet would look pretty good.

(Didn't address that in my first post )
