I bought a few springs from Grainger. Still haven't had a chance to try out my brakes, I did a 9bolt swap with PBR's. Going to try them out today and hope they work out.

In case anyone was looking for some extra springs, I bought both of the 1NCF2 and 1NCR5 spring packs since I didn't know which would work best.

(Shiny ones) 1NCF2= 22lbs
(Goldish ones)1NCR5= 19lbs

Paid 20$ with shipping and all so if anyone wants one or a few let me know.

Glad I found this before I bought a new prop. valve. Should be a sticky or something lol, much cheaper and easier than buying a whole new proportioning valve. Took me about 2 minutes to install the spring. Hopefully they work.

I installed mines 2 months ago and i could definitely feel the difference in rear braking power, you just have to be careful on wet ground i had to step on the brakes pretty hard coming on a soft turn and the rears locked and the car started to slip so i let go to correct and stop the sliding....fun fun fun . but overall a very inexpensive good upgrade, Hopefully in the near future i would like to add the 1LE kit from SSBC Brakes but its kinda pricy.

Although I would really like to test them out before sending them out. I'm having problems with my brake system, so my car may not be the best to try them out on.

I test drove it after installing the 22lb spring and did not feel much of a difference at all.

I'm going to jack up my rear tomorrow and put it in gear to see if my brakes lock (unlike before)

Make sure you bleed the system, My rear brakes lock up NOW as before they kept spinning while i had the car jacked up in the air.also, i feel better performance when stomping on the pedal from high speed. Grainger sells the springs,they come five per bag for $5.98 a cheap upgrade. here is the link.

Yes, it has been done and does work. However changing the spring pretty much accomplishes the same thing for a lot less money.

do you have any springs and how much are they 53086 I doing a rear disc brakes on a86 IROC Z will the rear rotor from a 4th gen fit and are they bigger and better ??

You can't simply exchange a fourthgen rotor for a thirdgen. The swap must be complete, to include backing plates--if so designed--calipers, rotors, parking brake cables and combination valve. The fourthgen LT1 (93-97), which are much like the 89-92 version, and the LS1 swap have been done many times, so our site has a mountain of info. You can start here:

I know this thread is a little old, but I went to install my 90-92 proportioning valve for PBR rear discs (so I was told) on my 89 Iroc-z convertible (disc/drum) and all the threads were different. Well, all but one I should say.

I removed the internals from both and swapped them around. I took a picture in the mean time because I remembered someone asked if just the spring could be changed for the disc/drum valves. Here is what I found: Drum internals on the left, disc on the right.


The anodized parts are different, as well as the spring ID and the perch in the cap. If you could find a stiffer spring that match the same dimensions I don't see why it wouldn't work. Hope this helps.

so for this to work on my 86 i have to get a 1989 prop valve and then buy the spring kits and also what would be the best spring since i just upgraded to 1LE front and the '89 9 bolt J65 PBR rears with the 11" disk

I don't want to take business away from Ed, but I'm curious to know the difference between:
'82-89 stock and '82-89 1LE/J65 valves
'90-92 stock and '90-92 1LE/J65 valves
'82-89 1LE/J65 and '90-92 1LE/J65 valves

I assume the blocks themselves are the same, so just a different vavle and spring? I assume the front metering is different as well so there isn't a delay on the fronts.

I used the stock internals out of a '90-92 disc/disc valve and put them in my '89 disc/drum vavle. I have LS1 fronts and a '97 rear, so the rear calipers are the same PBR's AFAIK. Not sure when I'll have the new setup running in order to test this out.

All four-wheel disc cars are J65. All 89+ cars have the so-called performance/1LE rear disc set-up.

82-88 standard disc brakes (10.5" discs and Delco-Moraine iron calipers).
89-92 performance/1LE disc brakes (11.7" discs and PBR alum calipers). Because of thread differences, there are two valves, a first design which fits 84 to early 89 cars (used when retro fitting) and a second design which fits late 89 though 92 cars.

What the internal differences might be, I can't say.

no but id sure like to know if it would work i got ls1 rear brakes and will be in need of a adjustment. Worst case u could pickup a drum al port valve and convert it to disk. would it be cheaper than buying new? i know the threads would be diffrent but u could just find some adapter fittings

I put one in a stock valve from a 1987 Trans Am, BTW you'l always have to bleed if you mess with brake lines/connections.

I did this mod also on my 1985 Z28 with the old school cast iron valve, works like a champ!

I've read about and seen the old-style valves as late as 85. Somewhere in there they went from SAE to metric. The physical design of the iron and alum valves is a bit different.

BTW, externally, the PV on my '83 and '85 look the same, except that the '83 is cast iron and the '85 looks like it's aluminum.

Can someone show me a picture of which orafice the spring goes into? I'm assuming the front one with the brake line attached to it?

On the old style, a brake line goes into the front (nose) of the valve, on the new style the line goes underneath the valve. Pics of the new style below.

Yup, that looks like the one on my '89. Both my '83 and '85 have the less blocky looking old style - like this:



My '83 looks exactly like the above pic, my '85 does as well, except the '85 appears to be made of aluminum.

I have a 83 camaro but mine doesn't have the chamber there it has it on the end pointing to the driver side. I'll try to post a picture later on. And I can't give results just yet because I'm replacing my lifters...:/..
