Re: post pictures of your head units!

I love it, it's easy to use and although my TA only has 2 speakers at the moment it sounds great, I just put it in so I haven't had too much experience with it, but so far I'm happy.

I tried staying with the factory look, so I put a 01 Grand Prix Cd player. Works, looks, and fits great.

Re: post pictures of your head units!

FINALLY, My radio install is complete. I've been planning what radio I want and how I want to install it etc since I got my '92 vert a year ago. Here's the end result:
Name: HUMountDay-Night.jpg
Views: 695
Size: 657.7 KB

For some reason my camera had trouble with the white balance in the night time shots (in the garage with just the door motor lights on) and if you notice I was taking them at 2am so didn't want to worry about messing with settings, so the red looks oarngeish.

Besides all the time I spent mocking everything up and seeing how things would fit and getting a faceplate designed so Mark at humount.com could make it for me, it ended up taking about 12 hours to get everything put in place.

I spent a few hours creating vector images of the '78-'81 version of the Camaro logo (by far my favorite) and the 25th Anniversary Logo. For those who aren't familiar with vector images, that means those logos are scalable to literally any size, without any loss of quality...I could make a 30 foot tall banner out of them.

I had to modify both upper and lower sections of the center console, as well as the stock faceplate. I also had to remove a lot of plastic from the dash where there wasn't room for the radio. It's a VERY tight fit. It was a ton of work, but IMO it was worth it because it's 100% unique. I still have to work on the rest of the sound system though.

Oh, and for the record the mirror is an auto dimming one with compass, temp, map lights and garage door openers, the thing between the defogger vents is a mount I made for my alarm's LED, and the thing on the steering wheel is a wireless removable RF ipod remote, that works with the head unit. And the center console is gray because I'm swapping from tan to black (it looked black when I bought it...)

There's a positive and negative wire. Negative can connect to anything negative in the car (chasis) but i found it easiest to hook it up to the negative in your radio harness. Positive can go to anything that puts out any amount of voltage when you want the name to be lit up. The more voltage, the brighter it lights up. You can hook it up to the illumination wire which would make it turn on when your DRLs or headlights are on, you can hook it up to the dimmer wire if you want it to turn on with your DRLs/headlights, and be dimable with the rest of your gauges and stuff, or you can hook it up to your radio's remote wire so it turns on when the radio is on (that's how I wired mine). You could also wire in an extra switch just for that, etc.

I know it's a little late, but yes it's possible but not with a 7" screen unless you have just a touchscreen there and a carputer somewhere else. I could just barely get the single DIN one to fit in there and that was after a lot of cutting and trimming or stuff back there (mostly just supports for the dash). No way in heck you could ever fit a 2 DIN in there. You'd have to completely get rid of the metal bar that does across and supports the entire dash, along with countless other things. I wouldn't even recommend the single DIN like I did because every time I have to take stuff apart isn't going to be a major pain...

If you're referring to the trim plate, read through the thread. The company is mentioned more than once.

Amateurs!

Here is my outside the box headunit idea I'm going as a small winter project in leu of mechanical work. I took a Jensen VM9512HD flipout and added a small companion

Tomorrow I'm going to finish up the wiring and test the duo. I still have to finish fabricating the faceplate to close the gaps at the sides, but here's what I've got.

Re: post pictures of your head units!

Can't believe that no one has posted one of these yet...

I put a stock 4th Gen CD Player into my '88 GTA. Wiring harness was exactly the same, but I had to buy an adapter for the antenna at BestBuy. Supposedly some '88s and all '89s on up even use the same antenna, so that wouldn't be necessary if you have one of those years.

I held off until I found a remanufactured one with the Equalizer sliders and an Auxiliary jack for my iPod. Its a very nice setup, I had a nice Pioneer head unit in before, and I can't tell a difference between that and this one at all.

Plus the lighting is an EXACT match for the 3rd Gen interior. I'm not talking close, as in it's red so it looks better than most, I'm talking the exact same shade. The lights also dim at the same rate as the dash lighting, which is very nice at night.

How did you modify the faceplate to get that to work and not look bad? I thought about doing it at one point but couldn't figure out anyway to modify the faceplate without having obvious lines where I had to cut the faceplate.

I want to do that or either figure out a way to get my single din unit in the bottom sit flush like a lot in this thread are. I'm guessing to do that people beat down the center hump to make room for it? If so did you not create problems with that hitting the transmission?

Eventually I plan to install a carputer in my camaro and will have only a 7" lcd at the radio area, but that is more trim work required that I can't figure out how to do without it looking horrible lol.

I like the JVC. It has over 30,000 color options the blue tooth and hands free set up. I think its a great stereo.

If you're referring to the trim plate, read through the thread. The company is mentioned more than once

Single din should work. I just purchased a humount for my Pioneer P800PRS. One of the best decks you can get.

Re: post pictures of your head units!

I just installed a JVC KDHDR61 in my '82. Love it.

It's got over 30,000 color possibilities, so it's easy to match the factory dash lighting if you want to.

I ordered from Crutchfield, and they added an installation kit, wiring harnesses, a relay, and a well written instruction sheet all for free. I couldn't have been happier with their service. My customer representative, Dean, even hand wrote a darned post card to thank me for the purchase, it showed up 2-3 days after the gear.

It has USB input, as well as an aux port on the front, and the power output is more than adequate to drive a set of Pioneer speakers to their maximum.

The other picture is of my Kicker HS8 (Hideaway Sub), it's smaller than some amplifiers I've seen, lol. Puts out excellent bass for its size, I'd say it's just a little less than a powered 8" Bazooka tube, which is more than enough for my Firebird.

Here is the setup I just ditched the Wii/Flipout combo for.

I just need a new faceplate and a matching volume **** to make it flow.

I think the 4th gen era delco units look really good in our cars. It's actually my all time favorite stereo for a thirdgen but I don't run one due to the limited functionality. This is the digital age and even CD's are out the door.

Just get one that has had an aux jack put in it. That's what I did. Unless you're pushing some serious audio equipment with it, you'll never notice a difference between a stock deco unit and any aftermarket deck you could buy.
