1992 Camaro Aftermarket Radio Install Help
Okay so my husband actually inherited a 1992 Chevy Camaro rs from his stepfather when he passed away this past September. The car has had a hole where the radio should have been since we got it. The car previously belong to a young man who raced it before making its way to his stepfather. It has clearly been wired for an amp in the past, so we went out and bought a new Sony head unit from Walmart to install in the Camaro. We made sure all connections were tight and the fuses were replaced. However, the radio wont power on at all. When tested it showed that the problem was that the car was not putting out enough juice to even turn on the radio. How could this be fixed? Sorry of this isn't clear. I'm a fist time poster.

You need three things to get the radio to power on. Constant 12v, switched 12v from the ignition and a good ground. Do you have a mulitmeter?

if you check those things with a meter and they are good, sometimes you have to run a bigger constant on, gm only powers the clock so its tiny but sony powers the amps and a bunch of things requiring bigger wire

the two connectors on the back that are orange and yellow? I had some and i didn't get power when I put yellow to yellow and left the orange hanging. I got power when I put yellow to orange and fine since (other than it over heating now...). Try that. If anything, you will blow a fuse (always a chance you will fry it though). I took a chance on my 85 and got power. Try it. Also check your accessory fuse (20 amp) and radio fuse (10 amp) as they control different things.

To begin with just randomly testing wires is the worst way/quickest route to car fires and burnt up electronics. If you don't know what a wire does or which wires to connect, never guess. Get a multimeter.
Back to the original post, if you are getting power but not enough to turn on the head unit, run a new 12v constant straight to the battery, with a 7.5 inline fuse, don't forget or skip the fuse, this new wire goes to the yellow on the head unit wiring, then find something that gets power only when the ignition is on, run a new wire from that to the red wire on the head unit harness, this is the 12v switched, or trigger wire.

I know this is old but we found out the radio we bought in past was a dud. So we junked and just went tonight to purchase another radio and give it a second chance. Still no luck. we tested all the ports and wires. We are getting plenty of power to the radio. However it still won't illuminate.

Take the stereo and the harness it came with out, twist the red and yellow wire together, have someone hold the black wire to the negative battery terminal, then touch the red/yellow wires to the positive terminal. If you still can't get the radio to come on its the radio. Get a refund.
