Infinity 4x6 question
Infinity 4x6 question
Hi,
I just bought a pair of the infinity 4x6 plates for my 92 camaro. The passengerside speaker seems to fit fine....But the driverside speaker wont fit..There seems to be a plastic piece in the way. I know some of you people have these speakers in your camaros/firebirds and im wondering how to fix this problem.
Thanks

I just cut out some of the plastic so it would fit.

Put spacers in the brackets to raise the LF speaker up within the mount. Thats what I did when I had my Infinity 4x6s.

Don't cut plastic...you never know what you might be cutting into!

Take your time and carefully look what your cutting into. The black plastic can be safely removed as long as you dont remove and parts that have screws that go into it. Below the black is white plastic. Dont cut that, that should be your inst panel that holds all the gauges. This info is from my Firebird, so Camaros may be a tad different, i dont know. But they do fit my Firebird and removing the black plastic caused no probs.

I have these in my car. to get it to fit on drivers side remove gauge cluster and small heater routing vent. trim and duct tape vent and cut black plastic support to make room for magnet on back of speaker.
I dont have the infinity's, but my clarions are about the same size, and I just had to do some reshaping to the plastic to get it to fit. at least in a bird it wont do any damage...unless you get carried away.

Read the tech article on this site for some good installation instructions. I couldn't get my Infinity plate to fit on the driver's side of my Firebird either, so I had to cut away some of the hard plastic, and I also had to heat the defroster duct with a heat gun and slightly reshape it (by pushing on it with a stick).

The spacer idea should work. That's how my Infinitys were set up in my RS. I've had 5 sets of front speakers in my car (Alpine, Infinity, Polk, Boston 4x6s, and Eclipse 6.5s), and the only ones that touched the grille were the 6.5s. As a matter of fact, the only ones I needed spacers for were the Infinitys!! Spacers if done correct will allow you to fit them in without cutting, and should give you about 3/8 inch clearance with regard to the dash grille.
Admittedly this is for a Camaro...I have no idea if this will work for a 'Bird too.

I've done a couple. I used Boston 746 plates, which because of the huge, offset magnet, require a lot of fabrication. I had to trim a lot of unimportant plastic, but still had the heat duct in the way. I heated it with a heat gun and pushed it back with a stick until I had sufficient space for the speakers. In cases where the tweeter sticks up, it is also sometimes necessary to trim some of the underside of the speaker grill. This is not biggie and not really noticable once it's installed, but what I did was cut out the entire center section of the grills so that just the skinny frame was left, then I stretched grill cloth over the frames and dropped them back into place. They looked like they came from GM that way, and only a hard-core Firebird guy would ever be able to distinguish these grills from the ones that came in the Premium firebird stereo.

just go ahead and cut into the plastic. it's just the air duct, nothing more, nothing less.
