Square Subs

I was bored over my thanksgiving break so I went to Borders to read some mags and Camaro books. Well, I was flipping through a car audio mag and I saw an ad for Square Sub's. Their whole thing was that they had more surface area than a circular sub with the same radius, and could therefore move more air. To me it seems that their akward shape would mean that they wouldn't flex as well, but I really don't know crap about car audio, I'm just getting involved in it now.

Anyone seen this AD? Any thoughts on these? If I remember correctly, they were produced by a fairly reputable company.

They're made by Kicker.

Wow, you don't read much about car audio. I work for Kicker, and we introduced the L7 or square woofer in January '2000.
Alot of people said they do, or won't work. Well, we beg to differ. We won over 70 trophy's this year, including expert in both USAC and IASCA with L7's. Mark Eldridge won top honors of both World Champions.
The L7 was designed to move more cone area that a round woofer, and also utilize all the box face area. They moved to dual voice coil and handle way more power. I have seen 900 watts to one 10" in a 1.75 ported box,and it was louder than two XPL 12's in the same car.
You can check them out at our web site at www.kicker.com

later!

They are awesome! I have 1 12" in my Camaro, and it is more than I need! Even though it is really loud, it has a great sound to it. Now I've been told that the 15" is really loud, but lacks in sound quiality.

I'm running 150 watts to mine with a Kicker DX700, and the speaker wants more! It has plenty more stroke to use! I would like to hear one with the DX 1400 when it comes out!

The 10" and 12" solos also have more stroke than a CompVR 18"!!!! They can move some massive amounts of air! The main thing I liked about them is how well they work in a small box. I built a 1.1 cu. ft. box in the well of my Camaro, and I still have room to use the hatch area when I have the cover panel down.

Awaiting results from all 8 ASE tests.

Starting to look like the Kicker poster child!

JP84Z,
If you have a DX700, I know you are putting way more than 150 watts to it. A DX700 can put out up to 900 watts. If you go to our website, you can get new specs on ported boxes. It will make a BIG difference!!! Trust me...these need ported boxes, unlike the years before models.
Hoping the DX1400 is released in January.

Duh, I knew that! I meant 750 watts. I don't know how I got the "1" in there! The spec sheet for my amp said 748 to be exact.

I have been kickin around the thought of building a ported box, but the installer at the store I bought it from said I prolly wouldn't like it because I like the accuracy of it now. He also said that I would have to tune it extremely low to get what I would like out of it. Besides, I love having the space in my hatch that I get with such a small box!
