Q about side post terminals...
Q about side post terminals...
I'm upgrading my system real soon and I'm going to put in a distribution block. I'll have to run either 4 or 8 guage wire from the battery but how to I actually spice it into the power wire with our side post terminals? Is there a device I can buy that lets me do this easily?

Yes, there is a replacement piece of the screw that holds the battery cable on. What it does is basically a big screw for the battery, then another one "piggy backed" ontop of that.
They are very nice, wish I could desribe it better.

under "Gold-Plated Battery Clamps:" the third one down is what you need. It replaces the screw holding the wire onto your battery, and has more threads sticking out, so you just bolt your power wire up to that. You can find the same thing (sans gold-plating) at a place like Auto Zone, or I've even seen ones by Rockford Fosgate at Best Buy.

Another option is to get a dual terminal battery. That's what I did for my IROC. I didn't feel that the little post thingie would look too good with 2 gauge wire coming off of it. By using the dual terminal battery, it allows you to keep the stock wiring intact and run all of your accessories off of the top terminal.

Jim
Just out of curiosty would be able to take a picture of how you have your 2 ga wired at the terminals. Just looking for ideas is all.
Thanks

I'll try to snap a picture tonight if I remember. It's just your run of the mill overpriced gold plated terminal mount that has a hex screw on the top. I've got gold ring terminals on the wire that bolt down to this terminal. I'm in the process of switching over to chrome because I'm sick of the corroded gold, but so far all I have is the ground terminal.

But then there's vaselene all over it!
I was never partial to the gold anyway. My engine is all polished aluminum, my amps are aluminum, my interior is grey, and there's those shiny gold terminals. I'm planning on going totally with chrome so that it will match the car better, plus they're lower maintance and I don't have to **** around with petrolium jelly all over my car.

that ****'s all a waste of money, unless you want a proffessional look,I used 20ft of 4awg wire and copper ring terminals from lowes(home improvement center) total cost of $25. although the battery screw was already there from a previous install. all you need is bare metal conections, dielectric grease only where the electrical contact is,not all over your ****!

Some of us just prefer our system not to look like a hack job. I also don't like the idea of sending 100+ amps of current through a cheap crimp-on ring terminal.

Jeez, just on the terminal, not all over everything...
And that actually goes for any battery terminal. If you go to the store and buy battery post washers, what you're actually getting is a felt washer saturated with petrolatum.
Of course, my lack of corrosion on the battery could also be due to it being a gel-filled sealed battery to begin with. I dunno, but it didn't hurt.
Well, okay it did turn the clear rubber protective covering to a not-so-clear amber color, but that thing just detracted from the look anyway.
And the terminal was twenty bucks. That hardly broke the bank..
See how it's got the 4 gauge on the main wire held on by a large hex screw (ring terminal sold seperately), and it's got two spots on the side that accept 8 gauge wire (you can see the wire for my MSD there, and the other side has the fogs).

That's the terminal style I used to have (still have on the +12 side) until I started moving over to the chrome stuff.
