It's probably a squarebore spacer, and your stock carb is spreadbore.

its got 4 round holes in it and square but corners point out where the bolts go

A squarebore spacer will have 4 relatively equal-sized holes, equally spaced apart. A spreadbore spacer will have 2 giant secondaries, with 2 small primaries with their centerlines further apart.

Depending on the height of the space, you may need to take into account hood clearance issues. I'd love to run a carb spacer, but I have no room. Seems like a good excuse for a cowl hood to me...
